The Madhya Pradesh High Court, on July 30, agreed to grant conditional bail to a man accused of outraging the modesty of a woman if she ties him a rakhi.

As per the order passed by Justice Rohit Arya, the molestation accused man and his wife are supposed to visit the complainant on August 3 on the day of Raksha Bandhan. They are supposed to arrive at the victim’s house with a rakhi and a box of sweets.

If the complainant agrees to tie the rakhi, it will denote a brother-sister relationship. Accordingly, the bail the applicant will be bound to “protect” the complainant in the future, a report by Bar and Bench states.

The accused will also have to give Rs 11,000 to the victim as “usually offered by brothers to sisters” on Rakhi. Another Rs 5,000 will have to be paid towards sweets and clothes of the complainant’s son.

Rakhi is a thread that is tied to the wrists of men by their sisters for protection. It is a ceremony marked by the exchange of gifts and is also symbolic of fostering filial bonds between people who may not be related by blood.

Notably, the accused had allegedly entered the complainant’s house on the afternoon of April 20, 2020, and grabbed her by her hand in an attempt to outrage her modesty.

Although the accused denied the charges claiming that the false accusations were made against him because he had urged the woman’s husband to repay a loan, he was kept in prison for two months for custodial interrogation.
