The death toll from the building collapse in Transport Nagar has risen to eight, with rescuers recovering three additional bodies from the debris, officials reported on Sunday.
The three-story building, which housed godowns and a motor workshop, collapsed on Saturday evening, injuring 28 people. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) identified the newly recovered victims as Raj Kishore (27), Rudra Yadav (24), and Jagrup Singh (35).
Rescue operations are still ongoing, with efforts now focused on ensuring that no one else is trapped under the rubble. A senior district administration official stated that the priority is to thoroughly search the site.
The building, constructed about four years ago, was undergoing some construction work at the time of the collapse, which occurred around 4:45 pm. Most of the victims were on the ground floor when the incident happened.
The injured have been taken to various hospitals, including Lok Bandhu Hospital. The building contained a motor workshop and warehouse on the ground floor, a medical godown on the first floor, and a cutlery warehouse on the second floor.
Akash Singh, an employee at the medical godown who survived the collapse, reported that a pillar in the building had developed a crack. He and others had moved to the ground floor to avoid the rain when the building suddenly collapsed.
