India’s energy sector has grown rapidly in the last few years with installed power capacity and electricity generation taking giant strides.
The total installed power capacity of the country has jumped from 305 gigawatts in 2015-16 to a projected 475 gigawatt in 2024-25, government said in a report on June 22. The electricity generation has risen to 1,824 billion units in 2024-25 from 1,169 billion units in 2015-16.
“The country is successfully balancing the twin goals of meeting rising electricity demand and promoting sustainability,” the statement said.
Emerging and developing economies will dominate the global electricity demand in the next three years and India will play a “central role” in energy transition as one of the fastest growing economies, according to the International Energy Agency.
The country’s energy demand is expected to double by 2035, with demand expected to grow at the fastest rate among major global economies.
The country also witnessed reduction in power shortages to 0.1 percent in FY25 and an increase in consumption with an almost 46 percent jump.
The country’s energy mix is also one of the most diverse in the world with thermal sector leading the pack with 240 GW of power, followed by solar at 110.9 and 51.3 GW of wind power, making strong shift towards clean energy.
Significantly, non-fossil fuel sources contribute 49 percent of the total power capacity.
