The Delhi government approached the Supreme Court on May 31, seeking its intervention to address the water crisis in the city. The government has requested the top court to direct neighbouring state Haryana to supply more water to the capital, according to a report by PTI.
This comes as the national capital has been facing a severe water shortage, with water minister Atishi accusing Haryana of not releasing Delhi's share of water.
The AAP government, led by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, has told the Supreme Court that demand for water in the city has risen significantly amid the prevailing heatwave conditions and neighbouring Haryana be directed to release extra water for a month.
Separately, Kejriwal urged the BJP to ask its governments in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to provide water to the national capital for a month, saying it was not the time to indulge in politics.
"I request everyone with folded hands that instead of doing politics at this time, let us together provide relief to the people of Delhi," Kejriwal said on X.
"If BJP talks to its governments of Haryana and UP and gets some water to Delhi for a month, the people of Delhi will appreciate this step of the BJP very much. Such extreme heat is beyond anyone's control. But if we all work together, we can provide relief to people," he said.
Earlier on May 29, the Delhi government directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to impose a fine of Rs 2,000 for water wastage.
The fine will be imposed for washing of cars with pipes, overflowing water tanks and use of domestic water for construction and commercial purposes, according to an official statement.
On May 30, the national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 45.6 degrees celsius, 5.2 notches above normal, according to the weather department.
Delhi has been in a heatwave condition for the last four days, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data.
