Delhi CM Selection News Live: BJP seeks time from LG for meeting newly elected MLAs ahead of govt formation

A day after registering a massive a victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, the BJP on Sunday sought time for a meeting of the newly elected party MLAs with Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva wrote to Saxena, seeking an appointment for a meeting with the 48 newly elected party MLAs and seven Lok Sabha MPs from the city.

"I along with the BJP MPs from Delhi and our newly elected 48 MLAs wish to meet you at an early date. Please, allow an appointment at an early date according to your convenience," he wrote to the LG.

Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring took a sharp jab at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), predicting a massive downfall for the party in the state’s 2027 elections.

“AAP’s condition was still decent in Delhi, but in Punjab, they are headed for a disastrous loss. If they even manage to secure seats in single digits, that would be an achievement for them,” Warring stated.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday slammed the INDIA alliance following the Delhi Assembly election results, calling it a "reactionary force" with no clear agenda or direction.

Speaking on the BJP's landslide victory, Pradhan said, "The group (INDIA alliance) is facing internal conflict. They have no goal or agenda but are just a reactionary force. The BJP has defeated both parties—one that ruled Delhi for a long time and one that has been in power for the last 10 years."

He further asserted that the opposition alliance is now "scattered," suggesting that internal rifts and lack of strategy contributed to its poor performance in the elections.

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, who retained her Kalkaji seat, faced criticism from Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal for holding a roadshow despite AAP’s significant defeat in the assembly elections.

Maliwal questioned the celebratory mood, stating, "Atishi should be ashamed. Her party has suffered a huge defeat... All their main leaders have lost. Yet, she did a roadshow to celebrate her win and even danced during it... What is she celebrating? Her party's loss?"

Maliwal also raised concerns regarding the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, criticizing the AAP government’s inaction on transparency measures.

"The people who came to power to bring the Jan Lokpal did not even implement the existing precedents... The CAG report should be tabled immediately in the Assembly and undergo a strict investigation," she asserted.

The buzz over BJP's chief ministerial pick intensified on Saturday after the party made a grand return to power in Delhi after a gap of more than 26 years, winning 48 seats in the 70-member Assembly.

JP's 'giant slayer' Parvesh Verma who defeated former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi constituency said the party's leadership will decide the next chief minister of Delhi.

"This is not just my victory, this is the victory of the people of Delhi who chose truth over lies, governance over gimmicks and development over deception. I humbly thank every voter who trusted me," he said.

The BJP's hyper-localised campaign targeting the AAP's loyal base among the poor with its welfare promises and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's depiction of Delhi's ruling party as AAP-da seemed to have connected big time with the city's voters, ending the party's drought of more than 26 years in the national capital.

The BJP's decimation of a plucky and ambitious opposition satrap in Arvind Kejriwal, who has led the Aam Aadmi Party to the status of a national party, in his bastion is a hammer blow to the already disjointed INDIA bloc, which has suffered a string of reverses following its spirited performance in the Lok Sabha polls.

BJP's Parvesh Verma and Tarvinder Singh Marwah emerged as the biggest giant-slayers in the high-octane Delhi Assembly elections, defeating AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in the New Delhi and Jangpura constituencies respectively.

In a fierce triangular contest in the New Delhi seat, Verma secured 30,088 votes, while Kejriwal trailed behind with 25,999 votes. Congress' Sandeep Dikshit finished third with 4,568 votes.

BJP's Marwah defeated Sisodia in the Jangpura constituency by a narrow margin of 675 votes. Marwah polled 38,859 votes, while Sisodia secured 38,184. Congress candidate Farhad Suri garnered 7,350 votes.

Ahead of Haryana Assembly polls, BJP's decision to replace Manohar Lal Khattar as CM paid rich dividends as the party went to polls with OBC leader Nayab Singh Saini.
