Coronavirus Daily Update: COVID-19 cases explained in charts

India reported more than 23,000 COVID-19 new cases on March 12. Active cases rose to 1.97 lakh mark. Over 2.61 crore beneficiaries have been vaccinated till date.

As many as 23,285 new cases of novel coronavirus were reported (highest since December 24, 2020), with India’s total COVID-19 cases above 1.13 crore, as per the health ministry’s March 12, 2021, update.India reported 117 new deaths and 15,157 new recoveries in the last 24 hours, the latest release showed. More than 2.61 crore vaccinations have been administered across India, according to the March 12 update, with 4,80,740 new vaccinations reported in a day.Active cases rose to 1,97,237 with an increase of 8,011 cases on March 12, the highest rise since September 17, 2020. Maharashtra now reports the most (1,07,307 or 54 percent) active cases in the country, followed by Kerala (34,082) and Punjab (10,069).Maharashtra reported the most (14,317 or 61 percent) new cases in the last 24 hours, followed by Kerala (2,133), Punjab (1,305), Karnataka (783) and Gujarat (710). These five states account for 83 percent of all the new cases reported in India.

Maharashtra also reported the most (57 or 49 percent) new deaths, followed by Punjab (18), Kerala (13), Tamil Nadu (5) and Madhya Pradesh (4). These five states account for 83 percent of all the new deaths reported across the country.About 20 states and union territories did not report any deaths today. These include: Andaman and Nicobar, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli/Daman and Diu, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Sikkim and Tripura. India’s recovery rate now at 96.9 percent. Maharashtra recorded 7,193 new recoveries, the most, followed by Kerala (3,753), Punjab (620), Tamil Nadu (543), and Gujarat (451).

The total number of COVID-19 cases in India is now at 1,13,08,846 with over 1.09 crore recoveries and 1,58,306 deaths as per March 12 update. The mortality rate in the country stands at 1.4 percent with Punjab reporting the highest (3.1 percent). More than 7 lakh daily tests reported as on March 11 with more than 22.49 crore tests carried out till date.

Despite the high number of cases and deaths reported by India, the country fares better when compared with other nations in terms of per million population.
