Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay resigned as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on March 5 and is set to join Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

"I will be joining the BJP, possibly on March 7. I am joining the BJP as it is a national party, which is fighting against the corruption of the TMC in Bengal," he said, according to news agency PTI.

Gangopadhyay, who announced his decision to quit and join politics two days ago, sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu with copies marked to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court TS Sivagnanam, news agency PTI reported citing sources.

He arrived at his chamber in the High Court complex in the morning after which the resignation letter was sent.

Gangopadhyay, whose rulings on various education-related issues in the state stirred political debates and pitted him against the ruling Trinamool Congress, said he would address all inquiries related to his resignation after submitting the letter.

"I will resign from the post of Justice of Calcutta High Court on Tuesday," he said on March 3.

In an interview to news agency ANI, Ganguly had expressed his desire to serve the public, stating that it was his conscience calling. "For the last two or more years I have been dealing with some matters, especially education matters, regarding which a huge corruption has been discovered and unearthed. A large number of important persons in the education sector of this government are now languishing in jail, under trial," the report quoted Gangopadhyay as saying.

He said the reason for him quitting the job was a call of his conscience and added he would work towards the welfare of the public.
