In a shocking statement, a Bihar Police official linked rise in criminal activities to farmers who are usually out of work during the April-June period. Several places in Bihar have witnessed an alarming rise in killings in the last few weeks, raising serious concerns over the law and order situation.
"Of late, Bihar has seen a rise in criminal activities. Murders tend to rise during the months of April, May and June ... for several years now this has been the trend. These murders mostly happen in this period because farmers don't have work then," Bihar Police ADG Headquarters Kundan Krishnan said.
He went on to say that murders continue until the arrival of monsoon. "This continues until it starts raining, as most farmers do not have work. After the rains, people in the farming community get busy and the incidents see a dip," he added while addressing the media.
ADG Krishnan noted that the desire for quick money and a glamorous lifestyle is pushing many youths toward crime. "Murders are on the rise ahead of the election season. We are concerned as young people are increasingly committing such acts for money," he said.
The official said that a new cell has been constituted to keep a tab on solely on contract killers. "A data bank of these contract killers will be maintained to check their activities in future,” he added.
"The cell will monitor old criminals and identify new shooters promptly to prevent contract killings and gang-related violence," Krishnan said.
The top cop's statement comes days after businessman Gopal Khemka was murdered outside his residence in Patna by a bike-borne assailant. Several other incidents including BJP leader Surendra Kewat's killing in the state has raised questions on the law and order in Bihar.
Earlier today, a murder convict who was out on parole was shot dead by gunmen inside a private hospital in Bihar's Patna on Thursday. The back-to-back killings in Bihar have sparked outrage against the Nitish Kumar government.
