With LPG supply disruptions continuing due to Iran war, PG Owner Welfare Association (Bengaluru) has advised citywide Paying Guest (PG) to implement temporary measures to conserve gas while ensuring uninterrupted food supply for residents.

In an advisory issued to its members, association’s core committee highlighted that from Monday to Friday, PGs should serve only two meals per day, while three meals can be maintained over the weekend.

“Items that consume high amounts of gas, such as dosa, poori, chapati, and similar preparations, are to be avoided. Cooking using residents’ personal LPG cylinders has been strictly prohibited, although the use of induction stoves is permitted where necessary. Small and medium PGs are encouraged to adopt 20-liter electric rice cookers to significantly reduce gas dependence”, it said.

The association has also suggested that nearby PGs collaborate on joint cooking, preparing food in a single kitchen and distributing it to other PGs to further cut consumption. “In extreme cases, sourcing LPG cylinders from nearby towns with lower demand may be explored, subject to verification,” it said.

The association stated that these measures are temporary but essential to prevent emergency kitchen shutdowns, maintain continuous food supply, and promote responsible community-based resource management. “The association is also in discussions with government authorities to stabilise LPG supply, and further updates will be provided as the situation evolves,” it said.

Bengaluru has an estimated 15,000 PG facilities housing more than 10 lakh people - from professionals in formal jobs to blue-collar workers. These facilities normally provide food to residents three times a day.
