India and Iran have been in touch in recent days over issues related to maritime movement and energy security, the government said on Thursday.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said S Jaishankar and Iran’s foreign minister had spoken three times recently.
“Iran foreign minister and India's Jaishankar have had 3 phone calls in recent days to discuss safe passage of ships, energy security,” Jaiswal said.
India has been closely monitoring developments in West Asia as tensions involving Donald Trump, Iran, and Israel raise concerns about the safety of commercial shipping and global energy supplies.
For India, maritime security is particularly important because a large share of its crude oil imports comes from the Gulf region. Many of these shipments pass through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical chokepoints for oil transport.
Any disruption to shipping in the region could affect international energy markets and supply routes used by several countries, including India. As a result, New Delhi has been maintaining diplomatic engagement with regional governments to ensure that trade routes remain open and that energy supplies are not disrupted.
India and Iran also maintain regular diplomatic contact given their long-standing economic and strategic ties. These engagements often include discussions on regional stability, maritime movement and issues related to energy cooperation.
