The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) on July 30 created a record when Manohari Gold tea, a specialty orthodox tea variety from Dibrugarh's Manohari Tea Estate, sold at Rs 50,000 a kg under the public auction system.

"The price that Manohari Gold has fetched is perhaps the highest for tea in a public tea auction in the world and it is a proud moment for GTAC which has emerged as a hub for specialty tea," claimed secretary of Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association, Dinesh Biyani.

City-based Sourabh Tea Traders Private Limited bought two kg of this tea on July 30.

The GTAC is a platform for tea producers to sell superior quality tea and its demand is increasing across the country which will encourage tea producers to cultivate good quality specialty tea to be auctioned at the centre," Biyani added.

The Manohari Gold Tea is cultivated from the finest P-126 tea clones, is hand-picked early morning in the second flush season in May and June, is very delicate, has a subtle aroma and the liquor is of a rich gold colour, Manohari Tea Estate owner Rajan Lohia said.

He said that the weather this year was not favourable for the production of the gold tea and only five kg of this could be produced this year.

Last year, a kilogramme of the same tea was sold for Rs 39,001 per kg.
