A breakthrough in a chilling murder case on the Yamuna Expressway came after investigators turned to artificial intelligence to identify a young woman whose body had been dumped by the roadside in Agra, according to reports.
The case surfaced on February 6 when a passerby noticed what appeared to be a body lying near the expressway in the Khandauli area and alerted authorities.
Police teams rushed to the location and discovered the body of a woman wrapped tightly in a blanket. There were visible injury marks on her neck and face, prompting suspicion that she had been killed elsewhere and later abandoned at the spot.
The murder, police later said, had taken place on November 30.
A forensic team and dog squad were called in to examine the scene. However, officers faced an immediate hurdle: the woman carried no identification documents. The only clues were two words written on her hand -- “RS" and “Sunny."
Photographs of the unidentified victim were circulated to police stations across the region and beyond in an effort to match her with missing persons reports. Despite extensive outreach, no immediate leads emerged.
With conventional identification methods failing, investigators opted for technological assistance. They employed AI-based tools to digitally reconstruct her face.
The process involved redrawing the facial features and digitally opening her eyes to create a more lifelike image. The enhanced version was then processed through an application to generate a clearer facial profile.
This AI-assisted reconstruction yielded a recognizable image.
The digital rendering proved decisive. According to NDTV, it helped establish the woman’s identity as Sonali, a 25-year-old resident of Mahoba.
As the investigation progressed, attention turned to the name “Sunny,” which had been found written on her hand. Police identified and located a man by that name and subsequently arrested him.
During questioning, officers said the accused admitted that Sonali had left her home to live with him and that they were in a live-in relationship. Investigators stated that he had decided he wanted to “get rid of her,” leading to the crime.
Police said he killed Sonali, wrapped her body in a blanket, and transported it to the Yamuna Expressway before dumping it in the Khandauli stretch.
