Indulging in alcoholic beverages like wine, beer, vodka, and spirits has gained popularity as a weekend trend. However, it's  important to know that alcohol, in conjunction with its metabolite acetaldehyde, can pose many health risks. These dangers apply to everyone, whether you are a regular drinker or just an occasional binge-drinker.

Hangover cure: Busting eight common myths and ways to fix it

The consequences of excessive alcohol intake are wide-ranging, spanning from the infamous hangover to severe liver damage. The morning after drinking, everything feels hazier, and clear thinking becomes a distant memory. The alarm clock's ringing drills into your pounding head, and even simple actions take extra effort. The vibrant version of you from the previous night undergoes a complete transformation, now bearing tired eyes and pale skin, a stark contrast to your former self.  It serves as a reminder that it's time to focus on recovery and feeling better.

When it comes to hangover, the interest in the potential of natural elements sourced from traditional herbs, diverse fruits, and vegetables has spiked like never before. Their purpose? To confront the multifaceted issues stemming from alcohol consumption that exceeds moderation.

‘Hangxiety’: why some people experience anxiety during a hangover

Although it's always recommended to drink moderately, if you do end up with a hangover, here's what you can do to detox:

Drink water: Yes drink water. As alcohol is a diuretic, it can lead to dehydration. Replenishing fluids is crucial to counteract this effect. Thus, start your day with a glass of water.

Lemon water: Your friends were spot on when they advised you to have a lemon ready for the morning after. A revitalising glass of lemon-infused water, seasoned with a pinch of black salt and cumin, can perform miracles. Lemon juice, brimming with Vitamin C, counters the aftermath of alcohol by aiding the liver's detoxification process and revitalising your body.

Hangover cures: Fried skull, bull’s penis’ soup, lemon in the armpit?

Coconut water: Alcohol can deplete essential minerals like potassium and sodium and electrolyte-rich drinks can help restore them. You can choose from  beverages with electrolytes, such as sports drinks or coconut water.

Ginger tea: Another go-to drink is ginger tea. Sipping on ginger tea can aid in calming your stomach and reducing nausea, common symptoms after drinking alcohol. You can also try peppermint tea, for relief.

Skip caffeine: Steer clear of coffee or caffeinated drinks. These can cause dehydration and contribute to anxiety, which may already be heightened after drinking.

Other remedies:

Aside from the above mentioned drinks, there are several other ways to deal with  a hangover. These include prioritising rest, using pain relievers like ibuprofen or aspirin for headaches, getting fresh air and light exercise, choosing healthy snacks like bananas or plain toast, allowing your body time to naturally detoxify, and having a balanced breakfast with whole grains, eggs, and fruits to stabilise blood sugar levels.
