US President Donald Trump once again managed to make headlines after he omitted the mention of Hindus, the single largest faction that celebrates the festival of lights, in his Diwali tweet.
Several people took to Twitter to show their displeasure, with some hinting that Trump doesn't know the difference between Buddhists and Hindus. Others poked fun at his media team insinuating that Trump doesn't write his own tweets.
Today, we gathered for Diwali, a holiday observed by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains throughout the United States & around the world. Hundreds of millions of people have gathered with family & friends to light the Diya and to mark the beginning of a New Year. https://t.co/epHogpTY1A pic.twitter.com/9LUwnhngWJ— Donald J. I can almost guarantee he thinks Hindus and Buddhists are the same thing.— Machine Pun Kelly (@KellyScaletta) November 14, 2018
You know who else celebrates the Hindu holiday of Diwali? HINDUS. But why am I bothering to critique a tweet you didn’t even write.— Andrew Wortman (@AmoneyResists) November 13, 2018
Realising his mistake, Trump shared another tweet moments later, where he referred to Diwali as "the Hindu festival of light".
It was my great honor to host a celebration of Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, in the Roosevelt Room at the @WhiteHouse this afternoon. Very, very special people! https://t.co/kQk7IvpSFo pic.twitter.com/tYlBABg4JF— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 13, 2018
Trump was also pictured lighting a 'diya' at the Roosevelt Room in the White House. In his Diwali speech, Trump also shared his condolences for the victims of the California wildfire, which claimed the lives of 42 civilians, making it the deadliest wildfire in the state's history.
