The trophy is lifted by the Aussies and congratulations to Australia, for retaining the Warne-Muralidaran Trophy. This is the 7th edition of that trophy with Australia winning it for the 5th time, losing it only once in 2016, with the one in 2022 being shared. They end their Test cycle perfectly, eager to take their next battle on against South Africa in the World Test Championship final in June. But in terms of immediate future, the teams shift focus to the ODI series, added as a last-minute request, with a view to prepare for the Champions Trophy. It will be a 2-match series, both day games and it is a real surprise, given that white-ball games these days are usually played under the lights. Both matches will be at the R.Premadasa Stadium, in Colombo, with the first ODI to be played on Wednesday, 12th February, 2025. Expect a stiffer challenge from the Lankans in that format against a depleted Aussie side, resting a few players. That's all from here but you can browse other matchcentres to catch all the action from the one-off Test between Zimabwe and Ireland, and the 2nd ODI between India and England. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

Now, time for a chat with STEVEN SMITH. Says that Australia played really well from the onset. Adds that the preparations were good before the series and everyone stood up to their capabilities and did as much as they could. Mentions that Mitchell Starc bowled really well, setting the tempo with the new ball and credits the spinners, Lyon and Kuhnemann, for executing their plans very well and using the conditions very well. Adds that they had a training camp in Dubai before the series predominantly for the batters to adapt to spinning conditions here and everyone had their individual plans, which they executed well. Mentions that they have such a good group and he loves to captain and is happy with the win. And he forgets that Sri Lanka collapsed in the second session on Day 1 here! Has that been so long? Ahhh... we can understand. Everyone wants to enjoy the moments after a win and wrap things up quickly. Roshan Abeysinghe quickly shifts the question to the partnership of Smith with Carey and the skipper agrees that it was an important one where Carey played really well and helped their team to put pressure back on Sri Lanka. Hopes to replicate these kind of performances in the future.

Sri Lanka's captain, Dhananjaya de Silva comes up for a chat now. Is obviously disappointed to lose a series, that too at home and admits that his team did not capitalize on opportunities. He accepts that losing the home series 2-0 is very disappointing. Mentions that the conditions were favourable for them as a home side and is disappointed to still finish on the losing side. Says they had opportunities here and there but the Aussies showed why they are in the finale of the WTC. Feels that the Lankans got the best conditions to bat in this game but put only 260 (257 to be precise) on the board, honestly saying that it was not enough to win a Test match. Admits that the second session on Day 1 was the changing moment of the game where they lost four wickets. On being asked as the reason for the success of the Aussie spinners, Dhananjaya feels that the Aussie bowlers were a lot more consistent in landing the ball in the right areas as compared to those of Sri Lanka.

Australia's skipper, STEVEN SMITH, HAS BEEN ADJUDGED THE PLAYER OF THE SERIES. We shall have the interview later.

Australia's ALEX CAREY HAS BEEN ADJUDGED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his wonderful 156 with the bat, to go with 3 catches and a stumping. Congratulates Dimuth Karunaratne first up for a wonderful career and wishes him a great future. On his own knock, puts it down to the platform laid down by the top order and then praises Steven Smith for showing his class again. Cheekily admits that he got lucky to bat at number 5, due to the injury to Inglis. Details that he was only looking to manipulate the field with his sweeps and reverse sweeps and informs that the ball misbehaved only when it was pitched on a good length. Praises Australia's bowlers for creating chances and details that in the subcontinent, as a keeper, one does expect plenty of chances to come his or her way.

DIMUTH KARUNARATNE, having played his last Test, is called up for a chat. Manages to brave a smile despite the loss and is understandably sad for calling it quits from the game. One can sense tears swelling in his eyes, as his voice is breaking but because of the glasses worn by him, we cannot see those. Happens to everyone, with emotions taking over. A big loss for Sri Lanka, but time to move forward. Karunaratne says that he is emotional as he had a long career of about 13 years. Adds that his family is around and now he will go and help them in any way he can as he will get ample time. Talks about memorable moments of his career as he says that all the things have been memorable so far. Mentions that he had a goal of playing Test matches for Sri Lanka and scoring 10,000 Test runs. Feels that he was lucky to play cricket for Sri Lanka and thanks everyone who supported him from coaches, to his friends and to his family. Talks about the next thing he will do after retiring as he will go to Australia to learn coaching and then will look forward to be doing whatever he can for Sri Lanka. He thanks every single fan who has watched him and thanks his team players as he will miss those moments when he used to play with them. In the end, he gets a bit emotional and talks in Sinhalese to thank his fans and family.

... THE PRESENTATION ...

MITCHELL STARC of Australia is up for a chat. He says that playing away from home is one of the great challenges. Is pleased to get the job done this time around in Sri Lanka. Says that they have had a fair bit of success in the past three to four years and also highlights that they have got a good balanced squad. Appreciates his teammates for playing good cricket and also highlights that they have found ways to win the matches. Appreciates the spinners and says they have been just brilliant on this turning track. Says there's a lot to look forward to and is excited to bowl with the new Dukes ball in English conditions in the WTC Finale. Is eager to play against South Africa, having not played against them for a while.

We talked about missed opportunities. Let's go back to Day 1 of the series. Australia were going hard after the bowling and as a result, presented lot of opportunities. As many as 4-5 chances or half chances came on the opening day itself and the Lankans could not take any. That allowed the Aussies to get off the hook. And perhaps, gave them confidence to bat well in these conditions. The second Test saw a disciplined batting effort, with not too many loose strokes. Sadly for Sri Lanka, their batting improved from the first game, but the bowling did not. The captaincy was a bit defensive, with Dhananjaya de Silva concentrating on stopping the boundaries and allowing easy singles, even to new batters. That allowed partnerships to brew and eventually, the scoreboard to keep rolling.

Another game of missed opportunities for the Lankans. First, they got the advantage of winning the toss, but then blew it away by collapsing from 93/1. Then, they had Australia at 91/3 but allowed the game to drift from there. And finally, on Day 3, they were 198/5 with half an hour left in the day's play and Australia getting nervous and irritated. But the hosts collapsed once again and literally handed the game on a platter. In terms of positives, Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis stood out for the hosts while Mathews revived his form. In the bowling front, Prabath Jayasuriya got the wickets but at too high a price. Amidst the dark clouds though, Nishan Peiris came out as bright light, bowling much better in this Test.

Coming to the match, yet another game where Australia strut their dominance yet again, with both bat and ball. After losing the toss, they kept the Lankans to 257 and then put on another masterclass with the bat, posting 414. Steven Smith enjoyed his purple catch, getting conecutive Test hundreds and becoming the leading century maker in Asia in Tests as an Aussie while the others, though not quite displaying a repeat of the first Test, managed to hang in for small but meaningful stands. Alex Carey was excellent, getting his first Test ton in 2-and-a half years and he will hope that he gets more chances to bat higher in the order in future. Once the lead of 157 was earned, it was always a question of whether it will be another innings defeat or will the Aussies get to bat again and they made a short work of the run chase.

Spare a thought for Dimuth Karunaratne. It is his final Test. He would have loved to end his career with a win but unfortunately, it could not happen for him. However, in terms of personal highs, he ends as Sri Lanka's fourth highest run getter, with 7222 runs at an average of 39.25, with 16 centuries. As a captain, he averaged 49.86 with the bat and his greatest point in his thrilling career as a skipper has to be the 2-0 series win in South Africa, in 2019. Additionally, since January 2015, Karunaratne scored 6276 runs in Tests as an opener, the most by any batter, at an average of 40.75. Wow, to stay on top for a decade - amazing. Take a bow, Dimuth. A sad way to finish your career but wish you all the very best in the next phase of your life.

A Test series win in the Island nation for Australia after 14 years. Without a doubt, they showed strong technicalities but one has to praise the coaching staff and management for picking the players for this series. If they picked an enterprising Sam Konstas to rattle a hot Jasprit Bumrah at the MCG, they went with experience in these turning conditions, taking the punt to push Travis Head to open. It worked at the MCG and it has worked in Galle, that too, twice. Fourth successive Test win for the Aussies and going a bit further, they have now been unbeaten for the last 6 Tests.

17.4AUSTRALIA WIN THE SECOND TEST MATCH BY 9 WICKETS! A clean sweep for them as they have executed their plans to perfection right from day one. Tossed up, around middle, Marnus Labuschagne comes forward and nudges it towards square leg for a single and hits the winning runs. A 2-0 series win for the Kangaroos.

17.3Similar ball, this time Marnus works it through mid-wicket. The timing is excellent and perhaps Labuschagne thinks it will be a boundary and runs the first one a touch slowly. He gets down to the other end and turns, looks up and sees the fielder get to the ball. Stops but then sees Khawaja charge across and resumes running for the second. Makes it in comfortably in the end. A run more needed for the win now.

17.2A touch short, around off, spinning in, Labuschagne stays back and nudges it to the leg side.

17.1Full, around leg stump, Marnus Labuschagne sweeps it fine but straight to short fine leg.

Well done, Dhananjaya de Silva! In his last Test and the last inning, Dimuth Karunaratne has been given the ball. What a touching moment. Reminds us of what MS Dhoni did with Sourav Ganguly in the latter's last Test. Excellent gesture. Karunaratne will bowl off spin.

16.6Flighted up, around off, Usman Khawaja defends it off the front foot. Australia need just 3 runs.

16.5Floated up, around off, Usman Khawaja strides forward and blocks it off towards cover.

16.4Tossed up, just outside off, Marnus Labuschagne comes forward and dabs it towards backward point and calls for two but is sent back by Usman Khawaja and gets a single only.

16.3On middle and leg, Marnus Labuschagne goes back to flick but misses and is hit on the pads.

16.2Full, on middle, Khawaja whips this through mid-wicket and has enough time to come back for the third. Just a hit away from the win now.

16.1Howzzat for LBW? Not out. Howzzat for a catch then? Not given. Okay, then review taken. No real celebration in the Sri Lankan camp with Dhananjaya de Silva just smiling, resigningly. It was a full ball outside off and Usman Khawaja looked to sweep. The ball went off something and the bowler and keeper immediately appealed for LBW. Meanwhile, Dhananjaya de Silva made a brilliant one-handed diving stop to his right and appealed for the catch as well. With both not given and not having much to lose, he signalled for the review. UltraEdge did not detect any bat, indicating that the ball went off the pad but Ball Tracking showed the impact to be well outside off. For the record, Sri Lanka have only 1 review left.

15.6Comes around the wicket, flighted up, around middle, Marnus Labuschagne flicks it towards mid on off the front foot.

15.5Floated up, around leg, Marnus Labuschagne comes forward and pads it away.

15.4Tossed up, much fuller, around middle, Marnus Labuschagne stays low and digs it out towards square leg.

15.3Outside leg, Marnus looks to sweep but misses. The keeper is blinded and misses the ball as well and by the time short fine leg can cut it off, two byes are taken. This stand is worth 30 now.

15.2Fuller on middle, watchfully defended.

15.1FOUR! Top shot. This innings may not be a big thing regarding a big score to enhance Marnus Labuschagne's career, but to spend some time in the middle will give a big boost to his confidence. With Webster, Konstas and McSweeney in the reckoning and Cameron Green expected to be fit for the World Test Championship final, the calls are getting louder by every match to drop Labuschagne from the side. It is all about confidence and this shot shows he is not short of that. Full, on middle and leg, Labuschagne comes forward and whips it efficiently with his wrists, getting it through mid-wicket for a boundary. 9 more runs needed to win now.

14.6Slow, full, on off, blocked out safely by Usman. Just 13 runs required to win now.

14.5Fuller and angling on the leg stump, Labuschagne pushes it along the ground to long on for a single.

14.4FOUR! How about that for a shot? Nishan drops a fuller-length delivery, around off, Marnus Labuschagne smothers the spin, uses his wrists and drills it straight down the ground past mid off for a boundary.

14.3Tossed up, on a good length, on leg, Marnus Labuschagne rocks back and taps it to the leg side.

14.2A full toss on off, Usman Khawaja laps it behind to deep fine for a single.

14.1Landed on off, on a good length, stabbed away but to short cover.

13.6Full and on the stumps, Marnus drives it to mid on.

13.5Fuller and outside off. Usman Khawaja works it towards long on for an easy single.

13.4Oh, just so close! Lucky there, is Khawaja! Too full and around off, Usman Khawaja pushes it with hard hands but gets an inside edge and the ball deflects off the boot and passes agonizingly close to the off pole.

13.3Around the stumps now, full and on middle, Usman Khawaja reverse sweeps it but straight to backward point.

13.2Fuller on middle, clipped away to short mid-wicket.

Take it on the chin, is the saying. No one advices what to do when you get it on the throat. A bit unfortunate for Kusal Mendis as the throw went beneath the grille of the helmet and hit him on the throat, possibly on the Adam's apple. He straightaway takes the helmet off and the physio is out in the middle now. All in readiness to resume now.

13.1Two slips in place along with a short leg for Prabath. Lands it on a length, around middle and leg, worked off the back foot to the right of short leg for a single. The short leg fielder, Kamindu Mendis scoots to the ball, picks it up and throws it flat and straight to the keeper where Kusal Mendis comes ahead of the stumps, tries to pick it on the bounce, but is hit on the throat.

12.6Well bowled! Landed on a good length, outside off, straightens up a bit, Usman Khawaja feels for it at first but drops his wrists in the end to let it be.

12.5Full on the leg stump, Marnus Labuschagne pushes it through backward point for a single.

12.4This goes on with the arm, on a length, and across off, Marnus Labuschagne gets pegged back and backs away to cut to the off side, but is beaten all ends up.

12.3Angling on the leg stump line, Usman Khawaja clips it to the right of the short leg fielder for a quick single.

12.2Full, on off, blocked again with a good stride out.

12.1Tossed up, full and on off, Usman Khawaja blocks it in front.

11.6Nice and full, on middle, Marnus Labuschagne leans and blocks.

11.5A bit full and on middle, defended well.

11.4JAFFA! Lands it right on the rough, spins away sharply from middle to off, on a good length, Marnus Labuschagne leans ahead to defend but the ball cuts off the surface and beats the outside edge.

11.3Straight on the stumps, full and on middle, Marnus Labuschagne presents full face of the bat to defend it out.

11.2FOUR! Right out from the textbook! 50 up for Australia! Too full from Jayasuriya, on off, Marnus Labuschagne gets the front foot out and creates some room for him. Brings his wrists in play and drives it inside out through cover for a boundary.

11.1Fuller, around off, Usman Khawaja shimmies down the track and slaps it hard to mid off for a comfortable single.

10.6Slower on middle, and on a good length, Usman Khawaja rocks back and steers it to deep square leg for one more. Australia need 28 more runs to win.

10.5Drags the length back, on the leg stump line, Marnus Labuschagne glances off the back foot to deep backward square leg for a single.

10.4Tap and run! Full, around off, Usman Khawaja lunges forward and eases it in the backward point region for a quick single.

10.3Nice and full, on off, Usman Khawaja taps it out to cover and wants to cross over, but is sent back by Marnus Labuschagne on a sharp call.

10.2Oh, close! Peiris darts it flat and full, just outside off, Usman Khawaja quickly gets on his knee to sweep but misses.

10.1In-drifter on off, Usman Khawaja strides ahead and defends it out.

9.6Fuller, outside off, 85 kph, Marnus gets a big stride in to defend this solidly.

9.5From around the wicket, flighting the ball, on leg stump, 84 kph, with a bit of a round-arm action, Labuschagne gets a big stride in to defend.

9.4Landed around off, Marnus Labuschagne stays back and pushes it to the off side.

9.3Fuller again, around middle, Marnus Labuschagne comes forward and drops it down towards short leg.

9.2Floated up, around middle, Marnus Labuschagne blocks it off.

9.1A mild appeal for LBW but there is no response from the umpire! Tossed up, much slower, around leg, a big turn, Marnus Labuschagne comes forward and looks to defend it but gets beaten on the inside edge and wears it on the pads. The replays show that it is pitched outside leg.

8.6Full, around off, Usman Khawaja gets forward in defense.

8.5This one skids on, from a fuller length, Labuschagne stays back to a full ball and flicks it off the inner half of the bat, with the ball flying past short leg. A single taken.

8.4Landed a touch short, around off, Marnus Labuschagne goes back and helps it towards short mid-wicket.

8.3FOUR! GLORIOUS! Flighted up, outside off again, Marnus Labuschagne extends his arms as he comes forward and drives it wide of cover for a boundary. Australia need 32 runs more.

8.2Floated up, just outside off, Marnus Labuschagne comes forward and drives it to mid off.

8.1Tossed up, slower through the air, Marnus Labuschagne shimmies down the track a bit early but manages to keep it down towards mid-wicket.

7.6Action replay of the previous delivery. Another reverse sweep, cannot get it past Nishan Peiris at short third again. A run and a wicket from the over, Prabath Jayasuriya's figures read 2-0-9-1.

7.5Landed around off, 85 kph, Usman Khawaja reverse sweeps it towards short third.

7.4Full, on middle and leg, 87 kph, Marnus Labuschagne gets off the mark, with a gentle clip through mid-wicket. Takes the single.

7.3Drags his length a bit, around middle, Marnus Labuschagne goes back and looks to play it to the leg side but misses and gets hit on the back pad again. There is an appeal for LBW but is turned down as it is going down the leg side.

7.2Tossed up, around off, Marnus Labuschagne comes forward and looks to defend it but gets beaten on the inside edge and gets hit on the pad. The ball lobs up towards short leg.

Marnus Labuschagne walks in at number 3, replacing Travis Head.

7.1OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Sri Lanka pick up the first wicket but is there a twist in the tale for them? Or is it already late for them? Prabath Jayasuriya comes from around the wicket and lands on the nagging length, on the fifth stump, skids through the surface, and goes a bit quicker than expected. Travis Head rocks back and looks to cut it but manages to get an outside edge only to the keeper. Kusal Mendis doesn't do any mistake as he catches it with both hands. 20 (23) for Head, another quick start and even though he is disappointed to not be there at the finish line, has given more than the start his team needed. Australia are 38/1 and need another 37 to win.

6.6Full, around middle, Usman defends.

6.5FOUR! Up and over! Tossed up, outside off, Khawaja comes down the track and just lofts it over mid off, getting a boundary. That's more than half the runs chewed off the target. 37 more needed to win.

6.4Fired in on off, 85 kph, coming in with the angle, Usman Khawaja looks to play it from the back foot, but gets squared up. Gets an outside edge which goes on the bounce to Dhananjaya de Silva at first slip.

6.3Fired in full, around middle, Travis Head makes room a bit and drills it to mid on for a quick single.

6.2Nagging length, quicker, but down the leg side, Travis Head goes back to flick it but misses as the ball brushes his front pad and goes to the keeper.

6.1Tossed up, around off, Usman Khawaja comes forward and pushes it to mid on for a quick single.

Change of ends for Nishan Peiris. 2-0-8-0 from the other end.

5.6Outside off, going on wih the arm, Travis looks to punch but misses.

5.5Full, around off, Head gets down and reverse sweeps this behind point for a couple.

5.4Full, well outside off, Travis Head gets a big stride to defend but then decides to pad it away, by keeping his bat behind the pad. There is an LBW shout, but it is turned down. Now, the thing to be noted here - was a shot played? If yes, the impact was miles outside off. If no, the impact does not matter. Dhananjaya de Silva ponders with his mates and takes the review. Replays seem to suggest that initially, Head looked to pad it away and then tried to play a shot, after the ball went past the bat. Interestingly, Ball Tracking data says NO SHOT OFFERED but the projection says that the ball is not spinning in enough to hit the off stump. Review lost for Sri Lanka.

5.3Drops it short, touch outside off, Travis Head rocks back and cuts it in the gap towards sweeper cover. Nishan Peiris runs in to his left and saves the boundary. The batters run a couple.

5.2FOUR! Australia are in a hurry! Floated up, but overpitched, around middle, Travis Head goes on his knee and sweeps it towards deep backward square leg for a boundary.

5.1Starts from over the wicket, nagging length, around off, Travis Head goes back and nudges it to mid-wicket.

'Pabbi' time? Yes, finally. Here comes Prabath Jayasuriya. 5/151 in the previous innings.

4.6FOUR! A freebie and Khawaja says 'Thank You'! Ramesh slips in a loopy full toss around off, Usman Khawaja cashes on it, takes it on the full and flicks it past the gap between mid on and mid-wicket for a boundary. Australia are up and running in this chase and need just 51 more runs to win.

4.5Nice and full, on off, blocked in front.

4.4FOUR! Easy peasy, says Khawaja! Full and drifting into the left-hander, on middle and leg, Usman Khawaja sweeps it through square leg. Lahiru Kumara starts to run from deep backward square leg to his right, but it is more of a jog and he is not even close to the ball as it reaches the ropes.

4.3Short and just outside off, Travis cuts it through cover for a single.

4.2FOUR! Slapped! Too full, an overpitched delivery, on the stumps, Travis Head finds the ball in his arc and shovels it up and over the bowler's head for a boundary. It lands just a yard before the boundary ropes.

4.1Fuller and around the off stump. Head gets beaten as the ball zips past the outside edge.

3.6Arm ball, drifting into the left-hander, full and on off, Usman Khawaja responds with a solid front foot block.

3.5Length, and around off, Khawaja defends off the back foot to backward point.

3.4Full and on off, paddled fine to deep fine for a couple of runs.

3.3Dragged length, outside off, a bit quicker through the air, Head cuts away to the deep cover for a single.

3.2Short, punched to the cover region.

3.1Full around off, Head pushes it to the bowler.

2.6Full and around leg, Khawaja presses forward and blocks it to short leg.

2.5Tossed up outside off, Khawaja gets forward for a drive but the ball zips past the outside edge.

2.4Flights it up, full and on off, drifting in and turning away, Khawaja is beaten on the outside edge. Kusal collects it near his chest.

2.3Nice and full, floated up around off, blocked out.

2.2Good length, outside off, punched away hard but straight to the fielder at cover. Pathum Nissanka dives to his right to intercept the ball.

2.1Short on the stumps, spins away, Khawaja blocks it off the back foot.

1.6Flatter on the stumps, Head punches it off the back foot straight back.

1.5FOUR! Not an ideal length now after two snorters! Dropped short outside off, Head rocks back and throws his hands at it, and somehow manages to hit it over covers. Kumara from long off runs to his right to cut it off but the ball wins the race. 67 more to win.

1.4BEATEN AGAIN! Pitches fuller and then grips and turns away from the left-hander around off, Head leans ahead to defend, plays inside the and gets beaten.

1.3And this goes straight on!  Flighted ball, just outside off, it lands and keeps drifting in, Head makes a very close leave as the ball passes scaringly close to the off pole.

1.2Whoa! Good grip and turn and Head is totally beaten! Pitches it on a length, around off and turns away sharply off the deck, Travis Head goes back to block and gets beaten on the outside edge.

1.1Slower through the air, full and outside off, Usman Khawaja leans forward and drives it along the spin and along the ground. Gets a single at long off.

'Galle'dozer from the other end? Nope. Nishan Peiris it will be.

0.6Short and gripping away from off, Khawaja punches it towards the cover-point region for a single to end the first over.

0.5Slightly drags the length back, does Ramesh Mendis, outside off, Head punches it off the back foot through covers for a single.

0.4That in-dipper on the stumps, Head carves it out to cover.

0.3Nice and full, looped around off, Travis Head drives it straight to the bowler.

0.2Australia are off the mark in the chase! Pitched right up, full and on middle and leg, Usman Khawaja clips it nicely along the ground to deep square leg for a single.

0.1Around the wickets, tossed up, full and around off, Usman Khawaja takes a stride ahead and defends it straight back to the bowler.
