September 23, 2023 / 23:39 IST
The gigantic Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad will play host to the tournament opener and the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup

India will host the 13th edition of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup across 10 iconic venues as hordes of passionate fans will watch the biggest cricketers on the planet put on a show for their respective countries. Defending champions England and the 2019 runners-up New Zealand will kick off the 2023 ODI World Cup in a rematch of the title match from 4 years ago at the mammoth Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

We take a look at the 100,000-plus-seater in Gujarat and the other 9 venues of the 2023 ODI World Cup. All fixtures will begin at 14:00 IST unless specified otherwise.

Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad

The stadium that will host the opener and the final, the largest sports stadium in the world will also host the epic India vs Pakistan encounter thriller. The venue, which was renovated in 2021 to its current state, has a reported capacity of around 132,000-capacity and is no stranger to the big occasion.

In March 1987, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar became the first one to scale the 10,000-Test run mark at the venue against Pakistan. In the recent past, in May 2023, it hosted the IPL final which saw the local team Gujarat Titans lose to Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling final.

2023 ODI World Cup matches: England vs New Zealand, October 5; India vs Pakistan, October 14; England vs Australia, November 4; South Africa vs Afghanistan, November 10; Final, November 19.

M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru

The home of the Royal Challengers Bangalore will offer some high-scoring thrillers thanks to its true pitch and relatively small boundary size of 65 metres. In the 2011 edition, Ireland's Kevin O’Brien smashed the fastest ODI World Cup hundred when he raced to the 3-figure mark in only 50 balls as he helped his team upset England by chasing a mammoth 328.

The fans would love to watch India have a successful time on the pitch against the Dutch but would be even more eager to watch 'local' boy Virat Kohli possibly break O'Brien's record.

2023 ODI World Cup matches: Australia vs Pakistan, October 20; England vs Sri Lanka, October 26; New Zealand vs Pakistan, November 4; New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, November 9; India vs Netherlands, November 12

M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
Sunny Chennai is expected to provide a different experience to Bengaluru with its humid climate and slow and low pitch. The 38,200-capacity M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, just a couple of kilometres from the majestic Marina beach, has seen its fair share of iconic moments.

India won its first-ever Test match at this venue in 1952, beating mighty England, India and Australia played out the first-ever tied Test match in 1986, and Yuvraj Singh smashed a 100 in the 2011 ODI World Cup in this venue as India coasted past the West Indies are just some of the great memories the 'Anbu Den' has provided for the 'knowledgable' Chennai crowd.

2023 ODI World Cup matches: India vs Australia, October 8; New Zealand vs Bangladesh, October 13; New Zealand vs Afghanistan, October 18; Pakistan vs Afghanistan, October 23; Pakistan vs South Africa, October 27

Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi

Formerly known as the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, this stadium is one of the most historic venues in the country. The master blaster Sachin Tendulkar broke Gavaskar's record for most Test tons after reaching his 35th century in 2005 against Sri Lanka.

The stadium has renovated its pitch, which has a reputation for being a slow one, so expect some pace at the upcoming World Cup.

2023 ODI World Cup matches: South Africa vs Sri Lanka, October 7; India vs Afghanistan, October 11; England vs Afghanistan, October 15; Australia vs Netherlands, October 25; Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, November 6

Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium, Dharamsala

Easily one of the prettiest, if not the prettiest, stadiums in the country with its picturesque views, the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium is another venue that is expected to produce high-scoring thriller thanks to its small boundary (64 metres).

It is one of the newest international venues in India having hosted India’s home games since 2013, when England took on the Men in Blue.

2023 ODI World Cup matches: Bangladesh vs Afghanistan, October 7; England vs Bangladesh, October 10; South Africa vs Netherlands, October 17; India vs New Zealand, October 22; Australia vs New Zealand, October 28

Eden Gardens, Kolkata

One of the largest venues in India before the renovated Narendra Modi Stadium, the historic Eden Gardens was the first stadium that hosted a World Cup final in 1987 after Lord’s hosted the first three.

The home of VVS Laxman's 281 against Australia in a Test match in 2001, Kolkata has hosted another World Cup final when it played host to West Indies and England in a thrilling T20 title match in 2016, which the Caribbean side won in dramatic circumstances.

2023 ODI World Cup matches: Netherlands vs Bangladesh, October 28; Pakistan vs Bangladesh, October 31; India vs South Africa, November 5; England vs Pakistan, November 11, Semifinal, November 16

Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow

Another new venue in this list, Lucknow’s cricket stadium has not seen much international cricket action since its completion in 2017. However, it has seen top-quality cricket as the Lucknow Super Giants call it home ever since their introduction to the IPL in 2022. The venue will be making its ODI World Cup debut.

2023 ODI World Cup matches: Australia vs South Africa, October 12; Australia vs Sri Lanka, October 16; Netherlands vs Sri Lanka, October 21; India vs England, October 29; Netherlands vs Afghanistan, November 3

Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

The unofficial ‘cricket capital’ of India has a rich pedigree of great matches and great players. This colossal venue was the platform for India's ODI World Cup win in 2011 when Dhoni 'finished off in style' that saw the Men in Blue lift the trophy after 28 years.

A couple of magical individual moments from this stadium include Sachin Tendulkar’s one-man show against the Aussies in the 1996 edition and, more recently, Kiwi left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel’s iconic 10-wicket haul against India in a Test match in December 2021.

In this edition, there will be a repeat of the iconic final from 2011 as India take on Sri Lanka.

2023 ODI World Cup matches: England vs South Africa, October 21; South Africa vs Bangladesh, October 24; India vs Sri Lanka, November 2; Australia vs Afghanistan, November 7; Semifinal, November 15

MCA International Stadium, Pune

The nearly 43,000-seater is another venue that is expected to produce exciting contests thanks to its true pitch and small boundaries. The MCA stadium hosted its first international game when India took on England in 2012 in an ODI and in 2016 it was granted Test status.

It will host an India game at the upcoming World Cup.

2023 ODI World Cup matches: India vs Bangladesh, October 19; Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka, October 30; New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, November 1; England vs Netherlands, November 8, Australia vs Bangladesh, November 11

Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad

The home of the Sunrisers Hyderabad, which was built in 2005, will play host to 3 matches at the upcoming World Cup. The nearly 40,000-seater will host 2 Pakistan matches

2023 ODI World Cup matches: Pakistan vs Netherlands, October 6; New Zealand vs Netherlands, October 9; Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, October 10
