Kolkata, Dec 14 (PTI) Chinmoy Roy, the lead actor in the 70's Bengali classic 'Charmurti', has taken up the director's baton to reinvent the movie. Based on a novel by popular writer late Narayan Gangopadhay, 'Charmurti', first made in 1978, had Roy playing the role of Tenida, the big-mouthed airhead of Potoldanga in Kolkata. "The new Charmurti will retain the old world feel of the original, but in a new contemporary avatar," Roy, who has delivered many memorable comic performances in the 70s and 80s, told PTI. The fight between four friends, led by Tenida, and a gang of criminals has also been captured in this new version, he said. Digressing a bit, he has made a reference to Maoists in a scene which would see the foursome from north Kolkata on a picnic to Dooars in north Bengal. Roy prefers to describe the new Charmurti as a 'jump' from the original "with the change in time, situation, people and surroundings". Asked to elucidate what he meant by the old world feel of the original, Roy said the hero, Tenida, will not flaunt a mobile or is not hooked to Facebook. (MORE)
