Claiming to be the numero uno in the e-commerce market, Bangalore based Flipkart said its internal estimates show it sold more high-value products while spending less on marketing compared to Amazon India during the Diwali sales, The Economic Times reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, Flipkart claims to have sold 70 percent to 80 percent more than Amazon (India) by value in the festive month of October. These numbers also include sales by its subsidiaries Myntra and Jabong.
However, the e-commerce major did not share any financial details, including the value of goods sold.
"The wide lead we have established during this month proves that a home-grown startup can successfully take on a 22-year global company (which) is pouring money to buy market share," CEO Binny Bansal told ET.
Amazon India, reported a growth of 2.7X in its sales volume during the recently concluded Great Indian Festival Sale compared with last year. Over 200 sellers sold goods worth over Rs 1 crore this Diwali on the platform.
Flipkart said it sold about 15.5 million units while Amazon India sold about 15 million units this Diwali sale. The aggressive claims by Flipkart come at a time, when it is struggling to maintain its number one slot in India's e-commerce market.
