Condoling the demise of Ratan Tata, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday recalled the contribution of the Tatas in the hill state during COVID-19 and also for promoting football's baby league.

While the former chairman of Tata conglomerates has never visited Meghalaya, the chief minister said the state benefitted through his many programs, including a grassroots football program.

"The Tata Trust had supported India's first grassroots football program, and the league organised for young footballers was a remarkable success," the chief minister told PTI.

n a tribute to the legacy of Ratan Naval Tata, the Bihar Postal Circle on Thursday released a special cover honouring chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, who died at a Mumbai hospital a day earlier.

The special cover was unveiled by Anil Kumar, Chief Postmaster General of the Bihar Circle in Patna.

“This release honours Ratan Naval Tata’s numerous contributions to industry, philanthropy, and national development. His visionary leadership and commitment to social causes have inspired millions across the nation. This special cover serves not only as a tribute but also as a reminder of the values that the legendary Ratan Tata upheld throughout his life,” said Anil Kumar during the event.

On the demise of Ratan Tata, US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti said, "...We mourn his loss in this country and in this world. When I was nominated by President Biden to serve as the 26th Ambassador of the United States to India, the first email I got from anybody, American or Indian, was from Mr Tata… He was one of those people whose vision was as limitless as the horizon..."

Expressing condolences on the demise of the doyen of Indian industry and Chairman Emeritus of Tata Group, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said he has left an indelible mark on society.

"Saddened by the passing away of Shri Ratan Tata, a leader par excellence, visionary industrialist, and philanthropist whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our society," Sitharaman said in a post on X.

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on an indefinite hunger strike along with his supporters at Delhi's Ladakh Bhawan, paid tributes to Ratan Tata on Thursday.

The hunger strike entered its fifth day on Thursday. In a post on X, Wangchuk paid homage to Tata, who died on Wednesday night at the age of 86, and said Tata Sons, owned by the Tata Trust, redistributes its wealth through social work.

"I want to pay my respects and homage to Ratan Tataji, who headed the Tata Sons. I've always admired them for their work for social welfare," Wangchuk said, adding that 66 per cent of Tata Sons is owned by Tata Trusts, which redistributes this wealth through its activities in education, health and rural development.

"Very few companies in the world do this, where impact is above the income of the company," he said.

On the demise of Ratan Tata, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said, "It is a big loss for Jharkhand... Ratan Tata started his life as an engineer but he has also worked in furnaces... He was always concerned about Jharkhand... He wanted to build another steel plant in Santhal Pargana... He was a very noble person..."

The final rites of renowned industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata were performed with full state honours at a central Mumbai crematorium on Thursday evening.

The Mumbai police paid tribute to Tata with a gun salute.

The industry titan's family members, including the half-brother Noel Tata, and top executives from the Tata Group like chairman N Chandrasekaran, were present at the crematorium in Worli.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said "Ratan Tata was a born industrialist and phelonthrophist and he used to do the right thing. He never tried to do any kind of fraud in the industry or earn money by any other means. He always says that the country comes first. I met him many times when I was the Industry Minister. When the Prime Minister of Japan was here, I got the opportunity to meet him...I pay tribute to him from my heart..."

On the demise of Ratan Tata, Former Cricketer Kapil Dev says, " Such a great man, when someone like that passes away, naturally we feel bad but the legacy he has left behind...I have no words...everybody has to leave this world but people will be known for their work...we will never find a better person than him"

In a solemn and heartfelt ceremony, India came together to bid a final farewell to one of its most respected and beloved industrial icons, Ratan Tata. Laid to rest with full state honours, the ceremony was marked by an outpouring of grief and admiration, as the nation paid tribute to the life and legacy of a man who was much more than a business tycoon.

In 1999, during acquisition talks between Tata Motors and Ford, Tata’s chairman, Ratan Tata, reportedly faced humiliation from Ford chairman Bill Ford. At the time, Tata Motors’ flagship vehicle, the Tata Indica, was underperforming with low sales. Bill Ford allegedly remarked, “You do not know anything. Why did you start the passenger car division? Ola Founder Bhavish Aggarwal on Thursday said Ratan Tata ignited the passion for electric vehicles (EVs) in him that led to the establishment of Ola Electric. In a post on X titled "Ratan Tata, my personal hero", Aggarwal outlined how Tata played a key role in setting up Ola Electric. "The one story I'd like to share today is his key role in the founding of my second company Ola Electric. One day in 2017 I got a call from him asking me to come to Mumbai. He just said - 'Bhavish I want to take you somewhere and show you something exciting'," he stated. (PTI)

The city of Jamshedpur, popularly known as 'Tatanagar', is mourning. And so is Jharkhand where a day's mourning was declared on Thursday in a mark of respect for industrialist Ratan Tata. Named after Tata Group's founding father Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, it was the timeless vision of Ratan Tata that propelled Jamshedpur's growth and put it on the global map. His contributions are considered significant towards shaping Jharkhand, a backward region that became a state in 2000. He first visited Jamshedpur in 1963 to look into how Tata Steel, now a global conglomerate, works. He then visited the city in 1965 to hone his pilot skills. As soon as the news of his demise spread, a pall of gloom descended on the city. Since the morning, people from different walks of life have been visiting the Tata Centre to pay their homage to the legend who died at a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday night at the age of 86. (PTI)

Air India, Air India Express, and Vistara are making special inflight announcements on Thursday in memory of Tata Group patriarch Ratan Tata, for whom aviation held a special place in his heart. The 86-year-old, who served as Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus, passed away on Wednesday night at a Mumbai hospital. According to a CNBC-TV18 report, officials stated that the three Tata Group airlines will pay tribute to him through these announcements on their flights throughout the day.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray along with his wife and son Aditya Thackeray visited NCPA grounds to pay their tributes to Ratan Tata. Apart from Thackerays, Sharad Pawar was also seen at the venue.

“Mr Tata was a force for good and embodied everything a great business leader should be. He built his businesses with a sense of purpose. While the Tatas already had a legacy of nation-building, serving society, customers, and philanthropy, he took it even further,” said GV Prasad, Co-Chairman & MD of Dr. Reddy’s Lab, in an interview with CNBC-TV18. Ratan Tata once spoke candidly about his childhood, parents' divorce, grandmother and his marriage plans during an interview in 2020. The former chairman of Tata Sons passed away at a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday night. Legendary industrialist Ratan Tata's body was on Thursday morning taken from his house in a hearse, decked with white flowers, to the NCPA in south Mumbai where it would be kept for people to pay their last respects. Before the hearse started from Tata's home, located a couple of kilometres away from the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), the Mumbai Police band played a tune as a mark of respect to him. The last rites of Ratan Tata, the former chairman of the Tata Group, will take place at Mumbai's Worli crematorium on October 10 after 4 PM. He passed away late on October 9. The group, with its listed entities’ combined market capitalisation at Rs 30 lakh crore, saw a dramatic growth with his strategic decisions and well-timed acquisitions. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed her grief over the demise of Ratan Tata. In a post on X, Sitharaman said, "Saddened by the passing away of Shri Ratan Tata, a leader par excellence, visionary industrialist, and philanthropist whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our society. His deep resolve to innovation, ethical business practices, and social responsibility transformed industries and uplifted communities. Extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His remarkable legacy will continue to inspire generations to come."

Sachin Tendulkar was among the early visitors who reached Ratan Tata's home to pay his tributes. Later, he took to X to remember the icon. "In his life, and demise, Mr Ratan Tata has moved the nation. I was fortunate to spend time with him, but millions, who have never met him, feel the same grief that I feel today. Such is his impact. From his love for animals to philanthropy, he showed that true progress can only be achieved when we care for those who don’t have the means to take care of themselves. Rest in peace, Mr Tata. Your legacy will continue to live through the institutions you built and values that you embraced," Tendulkar said in the post.

The mortal remains of Ratan Tata will be placed at the NCPA lawns for public viewing, with the final rites scheduled to take place at Worli Crematorium.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will represent the Government of India at the final rites of Ratan Tata.

Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla remembered Ratan Tata’s legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. He said that Tata’s decisions have impacted people’s lives ‘beyond financial metrics.’ “Over the decades, generations of my family and I have had close ties with the institution of Tata. Ratan Tata epitomised the finest ideals of the storied Tata Group. Through his career and actions, he unfailingly demonstrated that business, at its best, is both a vehicle for economic strength and a catalyst for societal progress. His decisions have impacted lives and industries far beyond financial metrics. His legacy will inspire future generations of Indians to pursue success with integrity. India and India Inc have lost a true visionary,” Birla said in the statement.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran issued an emotional statement. "For the Tata Group, Mr Tata was more than a chairperson. To me, he was a mentor, guide and friend. He inspired by example. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation, the Tata Group under his stewardship expanded its global footprint while always remaining true to its moral compass," Chandrasekaran said in the statement.
