In a major update for Aadhaar Card holders, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that citizens who hold Aadhaar soon be able to update their mobile numbers from home, removing the need to visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre.

In a post on X, UIDAI confirmed that it is introducing a new facility that will allow residents to update their registered mobile number remotely. While the tweet did not specify the exact rollout date, it emphasised that the process would be simpler and more convenient than the current method.

At present, updating the mobile number requires mandatory visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre, where biometric authentication is done.

However, with the upcoming feature will allow mobile number update without physical visits. While the authentication is likely to be done through biometrics or secure OTP workflows. Additionally, online completion will be easily done via the myAadhaar portal or app.

The mobile number linked to Aadhaar is critical for:
  • OTP-based authentication
  • Accessing government subsidies and benefits
  • Bank KYC
  • Income-tax verification
  • DigiLocker and other digital identity services
How the new feature will work

The upcoming system will use a secure combination of OTP verification and Aadhaar’s face authentication technology, enabling users to confirm their identity through their smartphone camera.

Aadhaar enrollment/updating fee

While enrollment and updation of name, address, gender, date of birth, mobile number or email address is absolutely free if done with biometric update. However, if you update any one of combination of the same separately it will cost you Rs 75.

Significantly, UIDAI has updated list of documents to ease the process of Aadhaar update and new enrollment. Earlier, people faced a lot of problems in getting Aadhaar made or updated. Now the new rules will reduce this problem considerably. In the new list, UIDAI has clarified the valid documents for PoI (Proof of Identity), PoA (Proof of Address), DoB (Proof of Date of Birth) and PoR (Proof of Relationship).

Address Change in Aadhaar

The list of documents for address update in Aadhaar is long. Passport, bank passbook or bank statement are valid, provided the passbook is up to date. Electricity bills, water bills and gas bills are also accepted, but they should not be older than three months.

Police verification or notarization is the most important document for tenants along with the rent agreement. Apart from this, Voter ID card (updated EPIC), ration card, house tax or property tax receipt also remains valid in address update.

Updating Date of Birth (DOB) in Aadhaar

Valid documents for date of birth update include Birth Certificate, Passport and 10th-12th mark sheet. PAN card is also valid, but only physical PAN. E-PAN is not accepted. A government ID card will also work, if it clearly says DOB.
