UIDAI deactivates 2 crore Aadhaar numbers of deceased

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated more than 2 crore Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals, as part of its effort to maintain accuracy in the Aadhaar database.

The statutory authority that maintains the Aadhaar database has further urged families to update death records of deceased members on UIDAI web portal.

So far, the information of the deceased individuals was gathered from various sources like Registrar General of India, birth and death registrar across states and union territories (UTs), public distribution system, national social assistance program. Further plans to collaborate with financial institutions are also underway.

“No Aadhaar number is ever re-assigned to another individual. However, in case of the death of a person, it is essential that his or her Aadhaar number is deactivated to prevent potential identity fraud,” the official statement from UIDAI reads.

How to register death of family members on UIDAI

It can be mentioned here that UIDAI launched the online service, ‘Reporting of Death of a family Member’ this year on June 9, on the myAadhaar Portal.

In order to report the death of a deceased member in the family, the relatives must gather all relevant documents related to the deceased, including  for proof of identity, Aadhaar card, death certificate from the registrar, medical statement from doctor, as well as your documents to prove your relationship with the deceased.

Here’s the step-by-step process to update death records on UIDAI:

1. Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in

2. Select 'Report death of a family member' tab

3. Enter Aadhaar Number of the deceased member

4. Click login with OTP (the verification is sent to the mobile number of the deceased)

5. Upload relevant documents

6. Submit the deactivation request.

This facility has been launched across 25 states and UTs using the Civil Registration System, a platform used for registration of birth and death of citizens.
