Universal Account Number is a unique 12-digit number provided by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to each employee contributing to the provident fund. UAN links various PF accounts on one roof, making it easy to manage retirement savings while switching jobs. Employees cannot use basic EPF services online, such as viewing passbooks, changing KYC, or submitting claims, without a UAN.
Find UAN using the EPFO portal
To find your UAN online, log in to the website of EPFO at www.epfindia.gov.in. Click on the "Services" tab and choose "For Employees." Under that, choose "Member UAN/Online Services (OCS/OTCP)." On the redirected page, hit "Know your UAN" on the bottom right. You will be asked to enter details like your member ID (present on your salary slip), Aadhaar or PAN, date of birth, and registered mobile number. Fill in these, and then submit the form so that an OTP can be sent to your mobile. Enter the OTP, and your UAN will be received by you on your mobile as an SMS.
Get your UAN from your employer
In case your mobile number is not linked or you’re unable to retrieve it online, your employer’s HR or payroll department can provide your UAN. Most companies include it on monthly payslips or the PF contribution statement. Since the UAN remains the same throughout your career regardless of job changes, it is often generated when your first PF account is created.
Use UMANG app to check UAN
You may also download your UAN through the government's UMANG mobile app. Install it, then launch the app and select EPFO services. Proceed to "Know your UAN" and enter a similar process with your registered mobile number and identification information. After verification, your UAN will appear on the screen or be sent in an SMS.
Keep your UAN handy for future use
Once you obtain your UAN, keep it safe and tag it with Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account to enjoy seamless EPF services. Linkages are necessary for claim processing on time, or even KYC updation might not occur.
