The Centre has prohibited ministries, departments, and CPSEs from spending on festival gifts, The Economic Times reported. The Finance Ministry's latest directive bars the use of public funds for Diwali or other festive occasions as part of efforts to enforce fiscal discipline.
The directive, issued through an office memorandum by the Department of Expenditure, is aimed at strengthening fiscal discipline and reducing avoidable spending, The Economic Times noted. The order explicitly mentions that no funds should be utilized for gifts or related items during festive occasions by any wing of the Government of India.
The Economic Times further reported that the decision, which has the approval of the Secretary (Expenditure), takes effect immediately.
