The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has given its nod for the appointment of former Coal India chief Pramod Agrawal as the chairman of the BSE, with effect from January 17, 2024.
Agrawal will succeed SS Mundra, the outgoing chairman and public interest director of the bourse, whose term will expire on January 16.
The decision to appoint him as the next BSE chief was taken by the exchange's board in a meeting held on December 13. The appointment was subject to approval from the market regulator.
BSE, located in Mumbai's Dalal Street, is among the country's leading stock exchange. During the day's trading session, company's shares settled at Rs 2,295 apiece on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), higher by 4.39 percent as against the previous day's close.
About Pramod Agrawal
Agrawal, a 1991-batch IAS officer, is presently serving as one of the company's public interest director. He held the position of chairman of Coal India from February 2020 to June 2023.
Prior to the assumption of the top post of the Maharatna coal mining behemoth, he was Principal Secretary, Department of Technical Education, Skill Development & Employment and Department of Labour in the Government of Madhya Pradesh.
In terms of educational backround, Agrawal is an IIT alumni, having completed B.Tech in Civil Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai (1986), and post-graduation in Design Engineering (M.Tech) from IIT, Delhi (1988).
He has over three decades of administrative experience, having served in the field of public administration, urban development, public health engineering department; public works department and transport department.
As a bureaucrat, Agrawal served as the managing director of Madhya Pradesh Finance Corporation, chairman-cum-managing director of Madhya Pradesh Paschim Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Company, and as chief executive officer of Madhya Pradesh Rural Development Authority. He was also the Collector of Morena and Mahasamund District of Madhya Pradesh.
