Sensex, Nifty gain 0.6% this week; RCom surges

Equity benchmarks closed the week on a positive note - the 50-share NSE Nifty went up 0.74%, to settle at 5,516.75 and the 30-share BSE Sensex rose 0.6%, to close at 18,376.48.

Equity benchmarks closed the week on a positive note - the 50-share NSE Nifty went up 0.74%, to settle at 5,516.75 and the 30-share BSE Sensex rose 0.6%, to close at 18,376.48.


Among largecaps - Reliance Communications shot up 9.5% and Reliance Capital gained 7.5%. HUL, Ambuja Cements, Sun Pharma and Bajaj Auto surged 5-6%.


However, Tata Motors lost 6.2% and M&M tumbled 5%. Hindalco was down 4.3% and Cairn India down 3.4%.


The CNX Midcap Index went up 1.5%.


In the midcap space, Britannia jumped 14%. Sterling Biotech, Monsanto and Aurobindo Pharma were up 7-11%.


However, BEML, Educomp, Shree Cement, Cummins, MphasiS and Gammon India slipped 2-7%.


Sun TV cracked 26.5% this week after media reports said the founder's brother, Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran, was named in a lawsuit related to the 2G probe.

Sun TV has strongly denied any role in the 2G scam. Sun TV CFO VC Unnikrishnan said neither Sun TV nor Kalanithi Maran have anything to do with 2G scam.
