German, Indian companies near deal to build submarines in India: Report

Germany is highkly keen on building submarines in India, which comes at a time when the German defence minister Boris Pistorius is on a visit to New Delhi.

This submarine technology will feature ThyddrnKrupp Marine Systems, Boris Pistorius told The Indian Express in an interview.

Thyssenkrupp AG’s marine arm and India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited are likely to jointly bid for an estimated $5.2 billion project to build six submarines for the Indian navy, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

German defence minister Boris Pistorius arrived in New Delhi on tuesday.

"India's skilled workforce & competitive costs along with Germany's high technologies & investment can further strengthen ties," Singh said in a statement without referring to submarines.

Submarines are currently a crucial requirement for the national capital due to its aging fleet. For effective patrolling of the Indian Ocean, the Indian Navy requires a minimum of 24 conventional submarines, but currenly possesses only 16 units. Out of this, barring the six recently comstructed vessles, the remaining are over 30 years old and are likely to be decommissioned in the future.
