Swedish telecom major Ericsson is expanding its Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) research and development capabilities in India, with plans to hire over 150 engineers at its Bengaluru facility.
“Expanding our ASIC R&D in India will enable us to leverage the local technology competence in the country towards enhancing our capabilities in semiconductor design,” said Nitin Bansal, Managing Director, Ericsson India. “This unit will also contribute towards strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem in the country.”
The Bengaluru expansion is part of Ericsson’s global strategy, underpinned by $5 billion in annual research and development (R&D) investments. In India, the company operates major R&D hubs in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Gurugram, working across various domains, including transport, cloud, OSS/BSS, artificial intelligence, and now, semiconductor design.
Anna Dicander, Vice President, Radio & Transport Engineering at Ericsson, said the new hiring push will strengthen the company’s Ericsson Silicon platform, which powers its programmable, energy-efficient SoC solutions used across Radio, RAN Compute, and Transport systems.
“By increasing our focus on ASIC development, we are reinforcing our technological prowess… and bringing new products and features to market faster,” Dicander added.
The expansion follows the launch of Ericsson’s India 6G research initiative in 2024, with a dedicated team now active at its Chennai R&D Center, positioning India as a strategic innovation base for next-generation telecom technologies.
