Maruti Suzuki's total vehicle sales in January rose 5.2% year-on-year to 115,433 units, helped by strong sales of its Swift hatchback and surge in exports.

Maruti Suzuki was hit hard over the last few months, as a labour unrest at its plant in Manesar hit production of Swift hatchback, and customers deferred car purchases amid expensive loans and high fuel prices.

The sales rebound cheered the investors, sending its stock up near 3% at Rs 1,218.15 in morning trade on Wednesday.

The India's largest passenger car maker by sales exported 14,386 units last month, up 54.3% from a year ago. Domestic sales, however, rose just 0.6% at 101,047 units.

Maruti Suzuki's total sales over April-January are down 14.3% year-on-year at 888,794 units. While domestic sales over the 10-month period fell 14.6% to 785,939 units, exports were down 11.8% to 102,855 units.

In January, Maruti Suzuki's compact sales, which include the Swift, Estilo and Ritz, jumped 22.4% at 25,756 units.

However, sales of mini cars (800, Alto, A-Star, WagonR) fell 2.4%, Dzire sales fell 11.6% and mid-size SX4 sales were down near 10%. Its van sales, which include the Omni and Eeco were also down 10.8% at 12,439 units in January.
