RoadMin mulls probe into, interim ban of VW diesel cars

Days after Volkswagen recalled 3.32 lakh vehicles, CNBC-TV18 has learned that the Road Ministry may consider banning sales of VW diesel cars in India till a new engine is introduced. Further, the ministry will order a fresh probe into Volkswagen to decide whether its cars were fitted with a cheating device.

Days after Volkswagen recalled 3.32 lakh vehicles, CNBC-TV18 has learned that the Road Ministry may consider banning sales of VW diesel cars in India till a new engine is introduced. Further, the ministry will order a fresh probe into Volkswagen to decide whether its cars were fitted with a cheating device.Already, the Heavy Industries Ministry has sent a show-cause notice to the company. In an interaction with CNBC-TV18, Heavy Industries Minister Anant Geete said it would now be up to the Road Ministry to decide whether to ban the sales of Volkswagen diesel vehicles in the interim. Meanwhile, despite recalling vehicles, Volkswagen India continues to put up a brave face, maintaining that its cars sold in the country were not equipped with the "cheating device" that has engulfed the group globally. It further added that emission levels of its cars were within those outlined by the country's BS-IV norms.
