Airlines face higher fuel costs as ATF rises 1%; restaurants get small LPG relief, home users see no change

The monthly fuel price reset brought mixed news on Saturday, a small relief for hotels and restaurants, but fresh pressure for India’s airlines.

While state-run oil firms raised aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices by nearly 1 per cent, they cut commercial LPG cylinder prices by Rs 5, offering marginal respite to the hospitality sector. The 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder, however, saw no change, extending its price freeze for yet another month.

Second consecutive ATF hike

According to state-owned fuel retailers, the ATF price in Delhi has been increased by Rs 777 per kilolitre, or 0.8 per cent, to Rs 94,543.02 per kl, the second straight monthly increase.

October 1: ATF was hiked by Rs 3,052.5 per kl (3.3 percent).

September 1: Rates were cut by Rs 1,308.41 per kl (1.4 percent).

ATF now costs Rs 88,444.87 per kl in Mumbai, Rs 98,089.68 in Chennai, and Rs 97,549.18 in Kolkata, varying with local taxes like VAT.

This rise is likely to push up operating costs for airlines, where fuel accounts for nearly 40 per cent of total expenses.

In contrast, oil firms have trimmed the price of commercial LPG cylinders (19 kg) by Rs 5, bringing the rate to Rs 1,590.50 in Delhi.

The reduction follows a Rs 15.50 hike in October but comes after six price cuts earlier this year, totalling Rs 223 per cylinder since April.

For household consumers, the cooking gas price remains unchanged at Rs 853 per 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi, Rs 852.50 in Mumbai, Rs 879 in Kolkata, and Rs 868.50 in Chennai.

The domestic LPG rate was last raised by Rs 50 per cylinder in April 2025, while petrol and diesel prices have remained unchanged since March last year, when they were reduced by Rs 2 a litre.

Petrol: Rs 94.72/litre (Delhi)

Diesel: Rs 87.62/litre

Fuel prices in India are reviewed every month by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) based on average global benchmark rates and the exchange rate.

ATF and LPG prices vary by city because of state taxes and transport costs. Oil prices globally have remained largely range-bound over the past month, leading to only minor domestic revisions this cycle.
