Unsurprisingly, Doodh Soda has now caught audiences’ fancy and is being talked about on the internet more than ever.

Doodh Soda in Dhurandhar

In the movie, Mohammad Aalam (Gaurav Gera), a secret Indian spy living in Lyari for years, runs a soda shop in the main market. This is where Hamza Ali Mazari (Ranveer Singh), who is sent by the Indian government on a mission, gets employed.

In one of the scenes, Mohammad Aalam refers to Doodh Soda and says in a fun way, “Darling, darling, dil kyun toda… peelo peelo, Aalam soda.” He also teaches Hamza how to make the drink. His shop assumes importance in the film, as Hamza and Aalam meet and devise plans to break the existing gangs, especially the one led by Rehman Dakait (Akshaye Khanna).

What is Doodh Soda?

While Doodh Soda may sound new to film audiences, it has been around for ages. It is popularly enjoyed in both India and Pakistan. Many families in Old Delhi continue to enjoy the drink as part of their summer tradition.

It is made using milk and lemon-lime soda, such as Sprite or 7-Up, in equal parts. The flavour is not the same when more milk is used than soda, or vice versa. Some people also use cola or Fanta in place of lemon-lime soda. The contrasting beverages, when blended together, create a refreshing taste, which is sweet, creamy, and fizzy.

Digital creator shows how it’s made in Pakistan

Recently, digital creator Sahilogy shared how the drink is actually made on the streets of Lahore, Pakistan. In his video, the milk is first heated in a large kadhai. Then, two special metal vessels are used to mix sugar and hot milk. They are placed in ice-cold water in an even bigger, wider steel vessel and rotated for a long time until the mixture cools. A red Coca-Cola is added to one vessel with milk and sugar, and an orange Fanta to another. It is mixed well and ready to drink.
