First came the Instagram outrage, then the news headlines, and now, a reluctant acknowledgment from Prada. The Italian luxury fashion house recently showcased sandals in their Spring/Summer collection that closely resemble India’s iconic Kolhapuri chappals. After being called out for overlooking the craft’s heritage, Prada has finally admitted to taking inspiration from traditional Indian footwear.

It all kicked off when Prada unveiled its new line of leather sandals, which looked very much similar to the handcrafted Kolhapuri chappals that Indian artisans have been making for generations. With no mention of the craft’s origin, social media users were quick to point out the glaring oversight.

Hashtags like #SupportLocal and #NotYourKolhapuri took over Instagram and Twitter, calling for fair credit and sparking conversations about cultural appropriation in global fashion.

After days of online backlash, Prada  recently released a public statement recognising the cultural significance of traditional Indian craftsmanship behind their sandal design. For many artisans in Kolhapur, this is a small but important moment. In a move that couldn’t have come at a better time, the Maharashtra government has decided to patent Kolhapuri chappals to prevent future misuse and imitation.

Here’s why you should buy authentic Kolhapuri chappals from local markets, for style, sustainability and support:

They’re handmade by skilled Indian artisans: Every pair of Kolhapuris is crafted using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Buying local keeps these skills alive and supports livelihoods.

They’re versatile with any outfit: Whether you’re in jeans, capris, sarees, salwar kameez or skirts, Kolhapuris blend effortlessly. Dress them up or down without thinking twice.

They’re eco-friendly and sustainable: Made using natural leather and minimal machinery, authentic Kolhapuris come with a small carbon footprint compared to mass-produced fast fashion alternatives.

They’re budget-friendly compared to designer rip-offs: Why pay a huge price for a Prada version when you can get the real thing for a fraction of the price? Plus, your money helps local businesses grow.

They’re rooted in Indian craft history: Originating from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, these chappals have been part of India’s fashion and cultural landscape for decades. Wearing them is like walking with history on your feet.

They age beautifully and last for years: With proper care, Kolhapuris mould to your feet and get more comfortable over time. Their durability easily beats most synthetic or high-street footwear.

They’re making a big fashion comeback: From Instagram influencers to Bollywood stars, everyone’s pairing Kolhapuris with both ethnic and western looks. The best revenge against cultural appropriation, is flaunting your originals proudly.
