The festival of colours comes with clouds of gulal, bursts of laughter, music in the background and endless selfies. But while your spirit celebrates, your hair often struggles. Between chemical pigments, repeated drenching, sun exposure and constant friction, strands can quickly turn dry, tangled and fragile. With mindful pre- and post-care, your hair can stay soft, shiny and resilient long after the colours fade.
Powdered colours and water may look harmless, but they can disrupt the hair cuticle, increase porosity and weaken strands. Add sun exposure and mechanical stress from tying, tugging or repeated washing, and the damage multiplies. Dr Mili Sinha, Aesthetic Physician at La Clinique and expert at Oteria, explains, “During Holi, hair is exposed to colour pigments, water, and mechanical stress which can disrupt the hair cuticle, increase porosity, and lead to breakage or dryness. Use protective oil to create a barrier against harsh colours and water. It supports hair’s structural integrity, natural shine, and overall health even amidst the vibrant chaos of the festival. Incorporating antioxidant rich serums or conditioners can further neutralize free radicals generated by colour chemicals and environmental stressors, reducing oxidative damage to the hair shaft.”
Start prepping a week before Holi. Hydrated hair is less porous and less likely to absorb stubborn pigments. Apply a deep conditioning mask twice that week or massage warm coconut, almond or argan oil into your scalp and lengths. Leave it overnight for maximum nourishment. Natural oils not only strengthen strands but also smoothen the cuticle, making it harder for colours to cling.
On the day of Holi, apply a light layer of oil or a leave-in conditioner. Focus on the ends, which are most vulnerable to dryness and breakage. This protective coat acts as a shield against harsh pigments and repeated water exposure. Tie your hair into braids, buns or ponytails to reduce tangling. Covering it with a scarf or hat adds an extra layer of defence — especially against allergens and direct sun. Gently brush your hair before heading out. Knots worsen when mixed with colour and water. If possible, get a light trim beforehand to remove split ends — healthy strands are less likely to snap under stress.
As soon as celebrations end, rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water as it opens the cuticle further and can intensify dryness. Use a mild, sulphate-free shampoo to remove residual colour without stripping natural oils. If pigments persist, opt for a clarifying shampoo and over-cleansing can worsen dryness. For a natural cleanse, try a homemade mix of aloe vera gel and diluted apple cider vinegar as a gentle rinse to restore pH balance and shine.
Follow up with a rich conditioner or mask infused with vitamin E or B7. Antioxidant-rich serums help neutralise free radicals triggered by chemical colours and sun exposure. A DIY hair mask of curd and honey can also soothe dryness naturally. Leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing. Drink plenty of water and include nutrient-rich foods in your diet to support hair resilience. Two to three days post-Holi, schedule another deep conditioning session to fully restore softness and manageability.
