For most people, there’s no better joy than celebrating Holi with loved ones, indulging in snacks and sweets, and drinking thandai laced with bhang. The festive beverage is enjoyed for the happy kick it gives, making the celebrations sweeter and more fun-filled.

But is it healthy to consume bhang? In his new post on Instagram, Delhi-based cardiologist Dr Alok Chopra wrote, “Bhang may be a part of festive tradition — but tradition does not mean harmless. Understanding its effects, hidden risks, and who should strictly avoid it is essential before normalising its use.”

He explained what bhang really does and why people end up drinking more than they should. “Bhang is not harmless. Bhang is a cannabis preparation containing THC, a psychoactive compound that affects the brain and nervous system,” he added.

And how does it work? Because its effect takes time to show, most people end up drinking in excess. Dr Chopra explained, “Edible cannabis (bhang) acts slowly. Many people over consume because they “don’t feel it” immediately. This delayed effect increases the risk of severe infections and emergency visits.”

What happens when you drink bhang

Who should avoid drinking bhang

Dr Chopra cautioned the high-risk groups to avoid drinking bhang. So if you have anxiety, depression, psychiatric conditions, or heart disease, you should stay away from it. Even those who are on psychiatric medication, pregnant or breastfeeding, or below 25 years of age should refrain.

“Celebration should never come at the cost of your health. Stay informed. Stay responsible,” the cardiologist concluded.

If you are someone looking for healthier options, a thandai without bhang and refined sugar is a good alternative. You can replace sugar with natural sweeteners, choose almond or low-fat milk, and use soaked nuts or poppy seeds over heavy creams.
