  • People with allergies, diabetes, or infants should avoid honey and garlic.

Garlic and honey have long been known to support health. They are common kitchen ingredients that are packed with flavour and nutrition, containing compounds that help heal several ailments. The two can be enjoyed alone in various recipes, but when combined, their health benefits increase.

Benefits of garlic and honey

Boosts immunity

Garlic and honey are known for their immune-boosting properties because of the presence of natural compounds. Chopped or crushed garlic activates allicin that is antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral. Honey also contains antioxidants and helps the body fight harmful bacteria. That is the reason honey and garlic are most often used to treat sore throats and fight seasonal cold and flu.

Protects heart health

Garlic can support cardiovascular health as its compounds such as allicin are known to improve blood flow and relax blood vessels. Studies also suggest that garlic may lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol levels, and improve circulation. While it has heart health benefits, it shouldn’t be used as a substitute for prescribed medications. Honey may not directly support hearth health, but it has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.

Aids digestion

Garlic and honey may enhance digestion together. Garlic stimulates the production of digestive enzymes that promote gut-friendly bacteria. This helps prevent bloating or constipation. Honey acts as natural prebiotic and calms that digestive system. It is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. When combined together and consumed before meals, they improve digestion and gut health.

Supports skin health

Garlic has traditionally been used to improve skin health. It has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that are helpful for acne and other skin conditions. Honey is used to soothe cuts, burns, and wounds. Together, they help clear the skin from the inside out. Take a teaspoon daily or apply it as a mask to soothe flared-up skin.

Improves joint health

Garlic contains allicin, which helps reduce inflammation, and honey is good for soothing joints. When combined, they help with arthritis and muscle pain. Add a dash of turmeric to make the mix more potent and support overall balance in the body.

Who should avoid it?

Those who are prone to allergies should consume garlic after consulting a doctor. Large amounts of garlic can also cause blood thinning and should be avoided by those on medication. If you have diabetes, honey may raise blood sugar levels. It also contains pollens that may trigger coughing, nausea, and more. Babies under one year should not be given honey, as it can cause a stomach condition called infant botulism.
