One of the best ways to stay hydrated is by drinking water. But if you’re bored with it, there are ways to make it exciting by adding natural electrolytes. They are better than store-bought drinks or powdered supplements. You can find natural ingredients in your home that do the job equally well.

What are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals that have an electric charge. They play an important role in maintaining fluid balance in your body. Additionally, they help flush out toxins, move nutrients into your cells, keep your heart rhythm steady, manage muscle contractions, and more. They are part of a healthy diet. While you get most of them from your diet and don’t need extra, if you sweat a lot after a workout, it’s best to keep them handy.

Natural cucumber ice cube electrolyte

In a new Instagram post, gastroenterologist Dr Joseph Salhab stitched a video of a man making cucumber ice cubes and adding it to his drink.

He says, “These green ice cubes have solved a serious problem for me. So I put fresh cucumbers through my juicer, pour the cucumber juice into large ice cube moulds, which then get frozen overnight, and I can take these cucumber ice cubes. My favourite use is throwing one or two in a water bottle, which not only keeps my water cold but also creates a natural electrolyte and vitamin water. It is better than the store-bought stuff and packed with vitamins and mineral electrolytes.”

Adding a little twist to the recipe, Dr Salhab tried his own variation. He sliced a cucumber, placed it in the blender, but instead of juicing it straight away, he added extra electrolytes in the form of coconut water and a squeeze of lime for taste. This also boosted its vitamin C content.

Dr Salhab said, “I blended it to keep the fibre and skin nutrients and then poured it into a silicone safe ice cube tray, covering and putting it in the freezer overnight.” He added that when he grabbed it in the morning, the green glow of the ice cubes was hard to miss. “It added perfectly to my water. It was fresh, hydrating, and natural. No added sugar, and I can even take it on the go.”

Here’s the recipe

Blend 1 large cucumber

Add 1 cup coconut water

Squeeze 1 full lime

Pour into a silicone ice cube tray

Freeze overnight

Drop a cube into water, sparkling water, or your favourite drink

Let it melt. Sip. Enjoy.
