Proud of you for being able to conceptualise something like this. You are showing gratitude at the end of the year for the people around you. But tumne apni reel mein khud ka naam nahi daala. Moneycontrol team spoke to Dr Madhukar Bhardwaj, Director & HOD, Neurology, Aakash Healthcare, to understand more about Archana's health condition. He explained, "Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) can have a substantial impact on the quality of life of Archana Puran Singh. Long after an injury heals, it frequently results in persistent, disproportionate pain along with swelling, stiffness, and changes in sensation. Although not fatal, it can be emotionally and physically crippling and necessitates long-term multidisciplinary care."

Causes of complex regional pain syndrome

It is believed to be brought on by a disruption or injury to the central and peripheral nerve systems, shared Dr Bhardwaj. "It can also develop following severe damage to the arm or leg. This may involve a fracture or a crushing injury," he added.

CRPS can also result from other large and small injuries, including sprained ankles, infections, heart attacks, and surgery.

"Not every person who sustains such an injury will eventually develop CRPS. Different inflammatory reactions and an unusual relationship between your central and peripheral nerve systems could be the cause," he shared.

Treatment plan

Early treatment helps improve symptoms of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). There is no single treatment, often, a combination of different treatments, tailored to your specific case, is required. Treatment options include medications like pain relievers, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, corticosteroids etc. Besides, heat therapy, topical analgesics, spinal cord stimulation, acupuncture and mirror therapy, among others, can help relieve pain, Dr Bhardwaj told Moneycontrol.

How does CRPS impact daily activities

The severe, chronic pain and sensitivity caused by CRPS can significantly interfere with day-to-day activities, making even basic tasks like dressing or holding objects agonizing due to an overreaction to touch. "It causes limb stiffness, swelling, muscle weakness, and skin color/temperature changes. It also restricts movement, interferes with sleep, and causes severe anxiety, depression, and social disengagement that affects work, self-care, and overall quality of life," he concluded.
