It is often difficult to find healthy substitutes for some of our favourite foods, especially jams. Store-bought ones contain high amounts of sugar and offer low nutritional value. Consuming them can cause obesity, blood sugar spikes, and other health problems. But a gastroenterologist recently shared a high-fibre jam recipe that is going to make your day.
In his new post on Instagram, Dr Joseph Salhab stitched a video of a woman making strawberry chia seed jam. She explained, “Cook frozen strawberries over medium heat, once they’re done, mash them with a fork and add chia seeds, place them in a jar and chill in the fridge, you’ll get this amazing strawberry jam with just two ingredients.”
This made Dr Salhab give it a shot, and he added his own twist with a fresh lemon and maple syrup. Take a look!
Ingredients
• Frozen strawberries
• Fresh lemon juice
• Chia seeds
• Pure maple syrup
Explaining the process, he said, “Lightly cooking frozen berries brings out a much stronger fruit flavour than using them fresh. So just place them in a pan on medium heat and cook them until they are soft, then mash easily. This releases their natural juices and concentrates the taste.”
Next, he added a squeeze of lemon to give it a fresh, bright flavour, stirred in chia seeds for fibre and thickness, and finished with a hint of maple syrup for natural sweetness. He advised refrigerating it for at least two hours.
Dr Salhab shared how this recipe gives you a thick, high-fibre homemade jam made from real ingredients that’s far healthier than the store-bought versions. Where to use it? “It’s perfect over yogurt, oatmeal, and even spread on a sandwich with your favourite nut butter,” he suggested.
