The holy month of Ramadan requires Muslims around the world to fast, abstaining from food and drinks during the daytime. While fasting for certain periods is generally considered to be good for the body, the shift in eating patterns can end up causing gut health issues, especially acid reflux.
Explaining the reason for this, Dr Anil Kumar Jangid, Senior Consultant, Gastroenterology and CK Birla Hospital, Jaipur, told Moneycontrol,"During Ramadan, long fasting hours followed by heavy meals can disturb digestion. An empty stomach for prolonged periods increases acid production, which may trigger acid reflux or heartburn.”
Those fasting often experience not only acid reflux but also constipation, digestive discomfort, and bloating. For this, the gastroenterologist recommended restricting certain foods and beverages that cause more harm than good.
“Overeating of fried, spicy, or sugary foods at Iftar further worsens symptoms. Reduced water and fibre intake can also lead to constipation and bloating,” Dr Jangid warned. He also suggested avoiding excessive fried foods, caffeine, and very spicy dishes.
The biggest mistake most people make is breaking their fast with a heavy meal. The best approach is to begin slowly. Dr Jangid suggested, “To protect gut health, break the fast with dates and lukewarm water, followed by light, balanced meals.” This gives your stomach time to adjust and begin producing digestive juices gradually.
It is best to incorporate healthy foods to stay healthy and energetic through the day. For this, the doctor suggested including fibre-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lentils. These help you stay full for longer and are excellent for your gut health.
Additionally, Dr Jangid advised on the foods you should have at dawn, as they promote satiety and give you steady energy. “At Suhoor, choose slow-digesting options like eggs, multigrain roti, oats, nuts, and yoghurt,” he said, also stressing the need to stay well hydrated between Iftar and Suhoor.
For general well-being, he advised, “Eat slowly, avoid overeating, and maintain proper sleep.” And for people with existing digestive issues, he recommended consulting a doctor before fasting.
