  • PUPPP causes itchy rashes in pregnancy, usually resolves after delivery
  • Severe itching without rash may signal cholestasis, needing medical attention
  • Consult a doctor if symptoms disrupt sleep or worsen rapidly

Pregnancy can bring about many changes in the skin due to the hormonal shifts the body goes through. Whether you’re itchy from a rash or develop eczema, it’s important to know when it should be considered just an annoyance or a problem that needs medical supervision.

Dr Shruthi Kalagara, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospitals, Bengaluru, shared some conditions that you may experience. Most of them are harmless and subside after giving birth, but others may require medical attention.

Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy (PUPPP)

The most common of them all is a condition known as Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy (PUPPP). It appears as an intensely itchy skin rash and hive-like bumps, which are very harmless. Usually appearing in the third trimester, it starts from the abdomen, within the stretch marks, and continues to spread to the thighs, arms, and breasts. This generally resolves shortly after the delivery.

Pregnancy-related eczema or atopic dermatitis

Another condition that is common among women who have a history of sensitive skin problems or seasonal allergy symptoms is known as pregnancy-related eczema or atopic dermatitis. The condition causes affected individuals to develop dry scaly skin patches, which appear on their neck and chest and the bends of their elbows and knees. These skin conditions need time to heal and require appropriate treatment, but as such, they do not present any danger to the growing foetus.

Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy

One requires medical help when they experience severe itching that occurs without any visible rash, which affects their hand palms and foot soles. There is a condition known as Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy, which creates this primary symptom. It requires obstetricians to monitor the liver condition, because it endangers foetal health. Any skin eruption which develops into fluid-filled blisters may point to an autoimmune condition.

What to do and when to consult a doctor

There are some common measures that can be taken, like switching to lukewarm water and applying cold compresses for immediate relief. It is also recommended to use fragrance-free hypoallergenic products. It is essential to seek a medical evaluation if symptoms disrupt sleep, cause anxiety, or progress rapidly. Both dermatologists and obstetricians offer safe treatments and reassurance.
