  • Use 1 cup liquid for every 1/4 cup chia seeds for ideal pudding consistency
  • Avoid dry chia seeds; they may cause gastrointestinal issues
  • Stir chia seeds well to prevent clumping and settling at the bottom

Chia seeds have gained traction in Indian households over the last few years. Even though tiny in size, they have an impressive nutrient profile, which is one of the main reasons people have started incorporating it into their diet.

What’s more? They make for a quick and easy breakfast that’s also highly delicious. For those on a time crunch, it’s pure bliss to pick the chia seed pudding from the refrigerator and enjoy it.

While there’s no stopping its craze, not many are aware of the right way to consume them, and they end up making mistakes that are completely avoidable. Here are a few common chia seed problems you should avoid and the right liquid-to-seed ratio for proper consistency.

5 mistakes to avoid when using chia seeds

The best way to enjoy chia seedsis by preparing a nutritious chia pudding or smoothie. Experts recommend avoiding these common mistakes to keep the flavour and texture intact.

Thin, runny texture of pudding

This is mainly due to either not using enough chia seeds or not waiting long enough for a good soak. This leaves the pudding with a thin, runny texture, which is not ideal. For proper consistency, use the right proportion of chia seeds and liquid, and give it enough time to rest in the liquid and form a gel. This will ensure a thicker, better texture.

Overly thick pudding

Just the same way, if you end up using too many chia seeds, the incorrect proportion will make the pudding thick and clumpy, making it difficult to consume. The trick, thus, lies in using the right proportion, mixing the chia seeds well in the liquid, and stirring it again before storing it in the fridge.

Seeds settling at the bottom

Chia seeds end up settling at the bottom of the pudding jar. That’s why they need proper stirring to ensure they don’t stick to the bottom. This should be done before storing them in the fridge, and some time before consuming them.

Seeds not fully hydrated

This often happens when you soak chia seedsdirectly in liquids that have a thick texture. The result is they won’t hydrate fully and expand. It can be avoided by using a thin liquid like water or nut-based milk. They can be added to thicker liquids like yoghurt later.

Preparing excess pudding

Avoid preparing an overly large batch for consumption, thinking it would last a few days. This will only make the texture too thick and unfit for consumption. So make just as much as you’d be able to consume the next day.

While these are some of the common mistakes, it’s also highly advised to not consume dry chia seeds as they may cause gastrointestinal issues that would do more harm than good.

The right proportion for chia pudding

When it comes to getting the right consistency, experts advise using 1 cup of liquid for every 1/4 cup of chia seeds, or 1/4 cup of liquid for every 1 tablespoon of chia seeds. For other recipes, this is the proportion you should follow:

Large smoothie (about 2 cups): Use up to 2 tablespoons of chia seeds

1 glass of water or juice: Add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds

1 cup of yoghurt: Mix in 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, plus add a little water to prevent clumping
