  • Cancer treatment costs in India can reach Rs 20–30 lakh for advanced cases
  • Out-of-pocket expenses rise as many patients exceed insurance coverage limits
  • A minimum sum insured of Rs 15–25 lakh is advised for comprehensive cancer care

Cancer treatment costs in India are rising sharply, with prolonged care and high out-of-pocket expenses continuing to place significant financial strain on patients and their families, according to claims data released by Care Health Insurance on World Cancer Awareness Day.

An analysis of the insurer’s claims shows that early-stage cancer treatment typically costs between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 7 lakh per case, while expenses for high-complexity and advanced cancers can escalate to Rs 20–30 lakh per treatment. Costs vary depending on disease progression, treatment protocols, intensity of care, and the duration of therapy, the company said.

The findings come at a time when the Union Budget 2026 has reiterated the government’s focus on improving access to affordable cancer care and reducing the financial burden on patients.

Cancer treatment in India often follows a prolonged, multi-stage pathway, with patients filing multiple claims over several months. While chemotherapy and radiotherapy are largely covered as day-care procedures, hospitalisation requirements differ widely based on treatment complexity. Lengths of stay range from three days to as long as 20 days in certain cases, the data showed.

“Cancer treatment is not only medically complex but also involves prolonged and multi-stage care pathways, often extending over several months,” said Manish Dodeja, chief operating officer at Care Health Insurance.

The insurer’s claims experience also points to wide variations in financial exposure across cancer types. Claims related to breast, oral, cervical, prostate and blood cancers, as well as advanced pancreatic and liver cancers, showed differing claim values. In several cases, policyholders breached coverage limits where the sum insured was relatively low, leading to higher out-of-pocket expenses.

Based on observed trends, Care Health Insurance said coverage adequacy is emerging as a critical gap. The analysis suggests that a minimum sum insured of Rs 15–25 lakh is increasingly required to adequately cover comprehensive cancer treatment, particularly in advanced-stage cases or those involving prolonged care.

The company added that comprehensive health insurance coverage—such as higher sums insured, no-claim bonus benefits, absence of sub-limits, access to a cashless hospital network and critical illness-specific covers—can play a key role in reducing financial stress and ensuring continuity of care.

“As treatment approaches evolve and become more accessible over time, it is important for consumers to periodically reassess their health insurance coverage to ensure it provides adequate financial security through the course of care,” Dodeja said.
