Are you confused between hot or cold water? Opting between one or another may seem like an easy choice, but it can affect digestion and comfort. They both hydrate, but temperature can affect gut motility and metabolism and bloating. In a few cases, warm or cold water is effective for smooth digestion.
Water is necessary for digestion, absorption of nutrients, and general gut function. But many ask whether the temperature of water matters. Some like warm water first thing, claiming that it “activates” digestion; others seek chilled water to refresh.
The truth is somewhere in the middle. Water temperature can affect gastric motility, enzyme activity and comfort level — even for those with sensitive stomachs. Rather than tagging one as better across the board, learning about how hot and cold water behave in relation to your gut can help you make smarter decisions that are based on a given scenario that speak to the needs of your body.
Warm or room-temperature water is generally thought to be easier on the digestive system. It may relax gastrointestinal muscles and assist in smoother bowel movements, especially first thing in the morning.
According to Dr Kavita Suri, Consultant Gastroenterologist- Felix Healthcare and Lifestyle Medicine Specialist based out of Mumbai, warm water can help stimulate blood flow to the gut and relieve mild bloating or constipation. And while it doesn’t “melt fat” or any of the other myths out there, she adds, it can have a soothing effect that encourages regularity.
Warm water could also dissolve fats from the meals a little more efficiently, which is why it’s best to consume warm water after heavy or oily foods.
Cold water can have the effect of constricting blood vessels for a short period and may reduce gastric emptying in some people. For those who tend to develop indigestion, cramps or have sensitivities, very cold water consumed during or right after meals can provide slight discomfort, says Dr Suri.
But most healthy people can tolerate cold water. Its hydration is just as effective as warm water. Cold water reduces body temperature after intense exercise and heat.
The main issue is moderation—very-cold water plus heavy meals can be uncomfortable for some.
It is often thought that cold water burns more calories as the body has to warm it up to body temperature. Though it is true that a difference in calories exists, the difference itself is negligible and irrelevant for weight loss.
Water temperature alone matters far less than meal composition, fibre intake and hydration levels as well as physical activity for digestion.

In the end, hot and cold water both can aid digestion. The “better” choice is based on your comfort level, health condition and timing. Awareness about oneself is more prominent than temperature.
