Honey is a natural superfood. It has long been celebrated for its numerous health benefits. Especially during the winter months, when the body is more susceptible to colds, flu, and dryness, honey proves to be an invaluable addition to your wellness routine. Its rich nutrient profile, including antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, provides both healing and protective properties, making it an ideal companion for your winter diet. However, with the rise of adulterated honey in the market, it's important to know how to distinguish pure honey from the impure.
Has it ever happened that when you dip a spoon into a jar of honey, it drips off too quickly, leaving behind a thin, watery residue? And when you pour it into warm water, it dissolves almost instantly, leaving no trace at the bottom? This is a common sign of adulteration, says Yusuf Galabhaiwala, Founder of HoneyAllDay. “Honey that has been mixed with sugar syrup or other cheap fillers lacks the rich, dense viscosity of pure honey. Its texture feels thin and syrupy. On the other hand pure honey maintains a slow, consistent drip,” he adds.

Galabhaiwala shares tips on how to identify pure honey and also explains the benefits:
- Water test: Add a spoonful of honey to a glass of water. Pure honey will sink to the bottom, while adulterated honey will dissolve or dilute in the water.
- Flame test: Light a cotton wick soaked in honey with a match. Pure honey will burn cleanly and quickly, while adulterated honey will not catch fire as easily.
- Crystallisation: Pure honey naturally crystallises over time, especially in colder conditions. If your honey remains in liquid form indefinitely, it may have been mixed with artificial sweeteners or syrups.
