In today’s fast-changing world, it can be hard to cope and easy to feel lost. Professional commitments and family obligations occupy most of our daily lives, making it a struggle to pause, reflect, and redirect ourselves.

That’s the reason why cardiologist Dr Jeremy London, in his new post on Instagram, shared the need to wake up early in the morning. “If you’re in a rut, if life isn’t moving in the direction you hoped, or if you feel like you’ve lost momentum, waking up early can be a quiet reset,” he said.

Benefits of waking up early

According to Dr London, waking up early in the morning gives you the freedom to choose how you want to begin your day without the dictates of the world. “Early mornings restore agency. When you wake up early, you’re no longer reacting to the world. You’re deciding how the day begins. That first decision creates momentum, and momentum changes behaviour,” he said.

But it is rarely easy if you don’t prioritise sleep. This implies resetting and restructuring your day and eliminating the unnecessary. “Waking up early also requires discipline the night before. You stop chasing distractions. You go to bed with intention. You begin organising your life around priorities instead of impulses,” the expert said.

Mornings are the time you have to yourself, where there are no distractions, and this gives you time to plan your day better. “The early morning is still no noise, no demands, no urgency. It’s time to think clearly, plan deliberately, and do the kind of work that actually moves you forward. Small acts that strengthen the entire day,” he added.

This comes from the personal experience of Dr London, as he shared that he holds his mornings sacred. "Wake up before the world. Begin with discipline. Start your day with an easy win,” he advised.

Some of the other benefits of waking up early in the morning include: sneaking in time for a morning walkto reset your circadian rhythm, planning your day, meditating, having time for breakfast, which gives you more energy for the day, and keeping you alert and more focused, among others.
