Many people know that chia seeds can be consumed in a variety of ways, but a fruit salad rarely crosses their minds. Dr Joseph Salhab, a Florida-based gastroenterologist, shared one such recipe by content creator Abir El Saghir on his Instagram handle, praising the dish for its health benefits.
Reacting to Saghir’s video of making the fruit salad, the gastroenterologist said, “This is a chia fruit salad. It has all the fruits that will help you use the restroom. I’ve never had something like this before, but it looks absolutely amazing. I’d totally eat it for breakfast.”
What makes it better is that it is a refreshing, fibre-packed fruit salad with a light citrus-honey chia dressing. It works perfectly as a gut-friendly dessert or breakfast that can be enjoyed by everyone.
• 4 cups of chopped fruits of your choice (berries, mango, kiwi, apple, dragon fruit, etc.)
• 1/4 cup chia seeds
• 1 cup water
• 1 cup orange juice
• 2 tablespoons honey
• Optional: splash of lemon juice
1. Add chia seeds to a bowl with 1 cup of water.
2. Let soak for 10 minutes until they form a gel.
3. Mix in orange juice, honey, and lemon juice.
4. Pour over chopped fruit and toss well.
5. Chill 15–30 minutes for the best texture and flavor.

When it comes to nutrition, chia seeds are a nutritional powerhouse. They contain soluble fibre, which aids digestion, lowers cholesterol, slows the absorption of sugar in the bloodstream, and keeps you full for longer. They are packed with antioxidants that help fight free radicals, thereby reducing the risk of inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. They also contain omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and plant-based protein.
They are best consumed with liquid: water and yoghurt are two popular options. Many people add chia seeds to smoothies and puddings for breakfast. They absorb liquid and swell up, making them a great addition to recipes of all kinds. However, they shouldn’t be consumed raw, as they can cause digestive issues.
