Your digestion, according to Ayurveda, strengthens in winter. However, the cold and dryness outside can disturb Vata, weaken circulation and leave the respiratory system brittle. This imbalance may impact your immunity. Plus, the climate can dry out the respiratory tract and slow down internal movement leading to toxin accumulation and lowered vitality if proper care isn’t taken.
Add to this the modern winter lifestyle, late nights, irregular meals, screen fatigue and minimal sunlight, can further harm your natural immunity. Dr Rekha Bhat, BAMS, MSc (Yoga Therapy), SOUKYA International Holistic Health Centre, says, “Winter boosts by the body’s digestive fire, making it the ideal period for nourishment and Rasayana therapies.”
Dr Bhat shares a combination of Rasayana therapies, seasonal routines and mind–body rituals that support the body from within.

Rasayana therapies are the backbone of winter immunity. Classical herbs such as amalaki, ashwagandha, haritaki, guduchi, yashtimadhu and shatavari help stabilise immune responses, reduce inflammation and strengthen respiratory health. When administered in the right way, they boost vitality, regulate hormones, improve sleep and steady emotions. Dr Bhat says, “Rasayana works at a cellular level, rebuilding tissues and enhancing resilience to seasonal stress.”
Warm oil massage, an age-old winter staple, keeps Vata grounded. It combats dryness, nourishes the skin and improve lymphatic movement, which is essential for immune defence. Abhyanga also calms the nervous system, helping the body stay centred despite winter’s harshness.
Steam therapy helps unclog channels and prevent mucus buildup in the lungs and sinuses. It supports detoxification and keeps respiratory pathways clear, making it a powerful complement to herbal Rasayana therapies.
Mild asanas, coupled with pranayama techniques like anuloma–viloma, ujjayi and mindful breathing, warm the body from within and expand lung capacity. “These practices regulate the nervous system, which is central to strong immunity,” Dr Bhat emphasises.
