  • Many fruits and vegetables may carry pesticide residues.
  • Study links higher pesticide residue produce to urine traces.
  • Washing, peeling, or choosing organic can reduce exposure.

Fruits and vegetables are essential for a healthy diet because they provide vitamins, minerals, and fibre that support well-being. However, studies shows that many popular produce items may also carry pesticide residues from farming.

A recent scientific study analysing dietary data and biomonitoring results from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that people who consumed produce known to carry higher pesticide residues were more likely to show traces of those chemicals in their urine. The research, published in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health, suggests that everyday food choices may significantly influence pesticide exposure.

The findings do not suggest people should stop eating fruits and vegetables. These foods remain essential for good health. However, understanding which crops tend to carry more residues can help shoppers make informed choices. whether by washing produce carefully, peeling when appropriate, or choosing organic versions where possible.

Here are 12 fruits and vegetables often found with higher pesticide residues

Spinach

Leafy, nutrient-rich spinach is a staple in many healthy diets, but testing frequently finds high levels of pesticide residues on its delicate leaves. Because spinach grows close to the ground and has a large surface area, it can easily absorb sprays used to protect crops from insects and disease.

Strawberries

Sweet, bright and widely loved, strawberries consistently rank among the most pesticide-treated fruits. Their soft skins make them vulnerable to mould and pests, prompting growers to apply multiple protective sprays during cultivation.

Kale, Collard and Mustard Greens

These leafy greens have surged in popularity thanks to their reputation as nutritional powerhouses. However, testing has revealed that many samples contain residues from multiple pesticides, partly because their textured leaves can trap agricultural sprays.

Grapes

Grapes are often eaten by the handful, but they are also frequently treated with pesticides. The fruit grows in dense clusters and has thin skins that can be easily damaged by insects or fungi, making chemical protection common during cultivation.

Peaches

Peaches are prized for their soft flesh and sweet aroma, yet their delicate skin also makes them highly susceptible to pests and disease. Farmers often rely on several rounds of pesticide treatments to protect the crop before harvest.

Cherries

Fresh cherries and those used in desserts can also carry noticeable pesticide residues. Their short growing season and vulnerability to insects often require growers to use multiple sprays to maintain crop quality.

Nectarines

Closely related to peaches, nectarines share many of the same agricultural challenges. They are prone to insect damage and fungal disease, which can lead to frequent pesticide use during the growing process.

Pears

Pears may appear hardy, but orchard pests can cause serious damage to the fruit. To protect yields, growers often apply pesticides, which can sometimes leave detectable residues by the time the fruit reaches shops.

Apples

One of the world’s most popular fruits, apples often undergo treatments not only during cultivation but sometimes after harvest to preserve their appearance and shelf life during storage and transport.

Blackberries

A relatively recent addition to pesticide monitoring lists, blackberries showed several chemical residues when agricultural testing expanded to include them. Their delicate structure makes them susceptible to pests and mould.

Blueberries

Often celebrated as a “superfood,” blueberries are widely consumed for their antioxidant benefits. However, commercial production on a large scale sometimes involves pesticide use to protect crops from insects and disease.

Potatoes

Despite growing underground, potatoes frequently require chemical treatments to prevent pests and crop diseases. Because they are eaten in many forms, from boiled to fried, estimating their exact pesticide exposure in diets can be complicated.
