For Indian representation on one of the most prominent fashion stages in the world, the Met Gala 2025 was expected to be a landmark event.
Fans were excited to witness a celebration of inclusivity and cross-cultural style, especially since Bollywood celebrities Shah Rukh Khan, Kiara Advani, Diljit Dosanjh, and Priyanka Chopra were present. Many were disappointed by what transpired, though, and it brought to light the ongoing disparities in the international recognition of Indian icons.
High fashion and glitz characterised the event, which took place at New York's famous Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, Indian representation was somewhat overshadowed by the beautiful ensembles.
Hope SRK and other stars donât go these international events. Itâs quite embarrassing to see them in such vulnerable state. Apna filmfare hi sahi hai.

A viral clip from Vogue’s red carpet coverage captured a particularly awkward exchange between Shah Rukh Khan and two interviewers, who struggled to converse with one of the most recognisable film stars globally.
The interviewers fumbled with basic facts, including failing to correctly pronounce the name of renowned designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, with one asking, “And this is the designer tonight?” Clearly unprepared for the conversation, they seemed unaware of the massive stature of both SRK and Sabyasachi. The discomfort in the air was palpable. Sabyasachi had to step in, explaining, “Just to give you a little bit of context, Shah Rukh Khan is probably one of the most famous men in the world, and his fan following is legendary. We nearly had a stampede outside the hotel when he came out.”

Beyond SRK, the coverage of other Indian attendees seemed sparse and fragmented, especially when compared to the extensive, focused attention given to stars from other regions, like K-pop artists. This disparity did not go unnoticed by fans.
On social media, the frustration was evident. A Reddit thread titled “Hope SRK and other stars don’t go to these international events…” gained considerable attention.
Fans expressed embarrassment and anger, with one writing, “It’s quite embarrassing to see them in such a vulnerable state. Apna Filmfare hi sahi hai.” Another comment pointed out the irony of Sabyasachi having to explain SRK’s fame: “He had to literally say, ‘SRK is one of the most famous people in the world.’ Uhhhh
