Throughout their storied careers, veteran actresses Shabana Azmi and Rekha have portrayed strong, complex female characters, making them two of the most recognisable figures in Indian cinema.
Both have earned a great deal of respect for their contributions to the film industry, despite having different styles. In a recent interview with Filmfare, Shabana Azmi related a humorous and memorable story about Rekha that made her genuinely admire the latter's public persona.
Shabana recounted what happened when she and Rekha were flying together. A fan came up to Rekha for an autograph while they were having a lively conversation, laughing and chatting easily. Shabana described what transpired as nothing less than theatrical genius.
“I have so many stories with Rekha,” Shabana began.
“But one thing stands out. We were on a flight, chatting away and laughing, when suddenly someone came over asking for an autograph. And then, like magic, her face changed—she transformed into this poised, distant star. She turned to the fan and said, ‘I’m talking. Can you wait a bit?’ I was completely taken aback. I thought to myself, ‘Wow! That’s how a star should behave!’ It was a complete transformation in a matter of seconds.”
Shabana quickly added that Rekha has always been extremely warm and affectionate in her personal interactions, despite the abrupt change in demeanour.

Rekha is still a glamorous and mysterious presence at movie premieres and award shows, despite the fact that she hasn't acted in a motion picture since her 2014 release Super Nani, in which she played the title character of Bharti Bhatia.
In contrast, Shabana Azmi is still involved in the field. She most recently appeared in the Netflix series Dabba Cartel, which centres on five middle-class women who operate a dabba (tiffin) service and inadvertently become involved in a drug ring. Jyotika and Shalini Pandey also appear in the series. Shabana's next appearance is in the eagerly awaited movie Lahore 1947.
